cryo treatment

Hello, if you hardened and tempered two identical D2 blades exactly the same except one is cryo treated in dry ice, and the other in liquid nitrogen, how much different would they be? Has anyone run this kind of test?
Thanks, Keith

Assuming the D2 was hardened in a typical manner to roughly 60 HRC, the cryo treatment could convert some retained austenite in the material and it will typically spike the hardness a point or two HRC. If you do not temper after cryo the material will be a little more brittle than the non-cryo'd material. There are a lot of other variables to this whole scenario like how long the blades sat from heat treatment to cryo treatment as austenite will stabilize over time.

Thanks for the input. I've been using dry ice for about 15 years, and was starting to wonder if I needed to switch to LN.
