Cryogenic freezing..

I had my sebenza's blade done, and they seem to really hold a edge. Takes along time for them to get dull.

S30V should be cryo'd but it must be part of the HT , not done later.

I understand that it is part of the heat treating. Did you have it done after you bought the knife and had it heat treated again?

You harden , optional 'snap temper' , cryo, double temper .Cryo must always be followed by temper !! The very complex steels like S30V should always be cryo'd and this will get 1-2 points more hardness .

I had it done after I bought the knives. Did I mess the steel up?

I am not a metallurgist, but no, I don’t think you harmed the steel, you probably didn’t get the optimal results that having it done as a step in the heat treatment would have had though. A few years ago cryo treaters were poping up all over and treating about anything you could carry in, having your rifle barrel or barreled action done was very trendy, I seem to remember news stories that people were having all manner of knives, razor blades, and even golf clubs done.

Alejandrino a number of knife makers do cryo treatment, I can’t recall for sure if CRK does or not.

Thanks, Todd ! I did notice that makers that do the process are advertising it. CRK, Spyderco and others do not claim. I think it would be to their advantage if they did.

If CRK does not cryo thier blades I would be disapointed. I want to know.
I think I remember someone at Spyderco Forum saying, they do cryo???
Yes, about D'Alton, he cryo's ALL of his steel, I have him heat treat all of my blades (amateur maker).

Razor, It should be always tempered after cryo ! Otherwise you risk brittleness.
