Cryogenic quenching of S30V

Hi
This probaly has been discussed before but I missed it. I am about to heat treat some S30V but don't have the facilities to do sub zero quench. I looked at the spec sheet for this steel and it says
"a freezing treatment may be used between the first and second tempers. Freezing treatment help to attain maxium hardenability and must always be followed by at least one temper." So if I don't cryogenic quench it, will that effect the performance of the blade or will it just be a couple of points softer on the RC scale (60RC instead of 62RC). If it effects the performance of the blade then I will have to find a place to sub quench it for me. Thanks in advance

You're right lots of discussion.

Here's some information.

The S30V info sheet from Crucible lists a freeze temp of -112. That's simply dry ice and acetone.

However the general consensus around here is to use Liquid Nitrogen at around -320.

I've ordered a dewar for LN (should be there when I get home) that holds about 5 liters. I've found LN for $3 a liter. Welding Supply places seem to keep it in stock. Although most folks can find it for about a buck.

There is great debate about -112 vs. -320. I went with -320, cause nobody said it's a problem and it's fairly easy to get.

Also it is generally agreed that cryo is necessary.

Hope that helps,

Steve
