Crystal Ring to steel on Scrapyard Knife

I can flick the side of the blade on my new 1311 and it has a ring to it that sound exactly like the ring you'd get for tapping a crystal glass with a fork. Interesting to hear it because I heard the same ring come from my old Cold Steel recon scout like years ago. Also seems to have the exact same kind of sharpened edge too.

What kind of technique is used to put the factory edge on the Busse knives? It's quite nice and scary sharp.

Most Busse edges seem to be toothy and slightly convex on the very edge grind, so my guess is a 300 - 400 grit slack belt.

I'd venture a guess that some of the ringing quality has to do the with material of the handle and how firmly it's attached - Busse makes things pretty solid.

A good clear ring is usually a sign of a good temper (as in knife tempering, not as in how happy or sad or angry the knife is).

It has to do with the heat treat and temper of the blade.

But I do want my knives to be happy and well adjusted.

Interesting about the temper, hadn't heard that.

Yep, my dad is really into knives and taught that to me. Not every knife does it but a lot of them will. Sometimes the handle materials can stop the vibration effect, but if you take a knife blank and hold it and smack it width wise against something like wood or plastic (that won't hurt it) like a tuning fork, a lot of the time a well tempered knife will have a really good ring to it. Crappy heat treated knives or swords can just go THUNK with no ring.

Of course there are exceptions and everything but as I understand it that's an old trick for testing for a good temper.

I seem to remember the Governator using this trick in Conan... I'm recalling him and Subotai at a smithy's tent, and he picks up a sword blank, gives it a flick with his finger, and holds it to his ear. He doesn't like what he hears and puts it back with a shake of his head...

I -think- that was Conan, wasn't it? Am I making that up in my head?

Ah, you know what? Any excuse to watch Conan again is a good excuse... TO THE DVD PLAYER!

I dunno if it was Conan or a similar type fantasy movie but pretty sure I remember that happening too. There were just loads of those sort of movies from the 70s to 80s.
