CS 1917 Cutlass?

While I'm in the neighborhood, can I ask for a short concrete review of how the CS 1917 is doing? Holding up? Breaking? Bending? Weaknesses?
General consensus on whether it's worth buying as a "user"? No intentions of using it, just see no point in buying a sword that isn't really a sword, and the Search function didn't give me much beyond "sharp" and "heavy". No display, no "home defense", no training or practice, just interested as a semi-historical example.
Thanks.

Out of all the swords I own from cold steel, that one is probably my favorite. It is a very sturdy and strong sword. However, the balance is a bit off and is heavy for its size in my opinion. I have messed around with it for countless hours and the blade stills holds up perfectly, it also has fairly descent edge retention. I have tried pull ups with it like in the cold steel video (I’m 175 lbs.) and it has not bent or warped at all. If you want a good cutlass, I would defiantly go for it. However, it is a B*&^%$ and a half to sharpen effectively without scrapping off the finish.

Just found it's made in India.
Re-thinking the list.
Very little faith in any blade made in India.

Ah yes.... if it works but is made somewhere I don't trust it must be bad :D. If it works it works. Quality control is somewhat spotty but it is serviceable.

I personally prefer the 1796 both aesthetically and functionally. Atrims might be coming out with real "sabres" soon :D.

Good point, of course.
I just get stubborn about some things when I have a couple unpleasant experiences with them. :D
Any idea what the steel in them is? I could probably be persuaded to change my mind. When the winds of prevailing opinion blow fiercely I can be a man of very strong indecision.
Don't suppose anybody's boarded a ship or two with them, lopped a couple heads, killed a pig, rescued a damsel, anything like that?

Hi Guys
I had understood that the 1917 Cutlass was made in the US, but I bought mine about 4 years ago. Other swords are Indian made, my scottish(yuk) dirk came complete with a made in India label. I have cut a few bottles with the cutlass but notheing else. no prblems except the grip is a bit slippery.

Well, there was this one time where I conquered Spain and Cuba in a single evening with my first mate and parrot….

But seriously, I too was scared when I first bought the cutlass, when it arrived and I opened up the outer package and the wrapping on the inside said “made in India” I just about wept. It didn’t get any better when I opened it up because there was WAY too much wax on the blade to keep it from rusting. However, after 30 min I got it all off and I was astonished of the quality of the sword. (If I remember correctly, the sword is assembled in India I found out, the blade and guard are made in Japan). If it wasn't as good as i'm telling you it is, i would have picked a different forum name.

And remember, if you’re not satisfied with your product, you can always get a refund and get something else.

P.S. Arrrrrrr me matey! (sorry i just had to)

Pmel,
Glass bottles or two-litre plastic?

Cutlass,
Must have been an interesting evening on the Spain & Cuba Day.
Didn't mean to disparage your opinion on the 1917, just being skeptically cautious. NOBODY has much of a high opinion of Indian cutlery.
I'm leaning back in favor.
AAAARRRRRRHHHHHHH! :D

Wow! You must be pretty good with a sword!
Or....were the BOTTLES hanging & standing on a post? :p
Denis :D

Yeah.. soda bottles are nice easy targets that show quite clearly how straight a cut is :D - when empty you really have to have good acceleration. Pool noodles are used occasionally, but recently I've heard lots of recommendations for pipe insulation foam.... at least before tatami.
I wonder if anyone still uses the 1917 cutlass.... what with pirate attacks on the rise. Will the Tanto work well against ninja? :jerkit:

Ah. Thank you.
We don't have pools in Utah, didn't know those things had a name.
