I like Carbon V. I own two Cold Steel fixed blade hunters with it, and the stuff gets scary sharp and holds an edge. So when I ordered my Queen Cattle King, I also shelled out the cash for a Cold Steel large stockman.

The knife looked decent from a fit and finish perspective. Had some nice snap. Handle materials were cheap, but that's what you get when you order black "faux jigged bone" (ie. plastic) scales. What perplexed me was the Cold Steel logo inset. It was upside-down! That is, when you sat the knife on its springs (as you would any slipjoint), "COLD STEEL" is upside-down on this knife.

So I called Cold Steel to see if this was a manufacturer's defect. The customer service rep said something like, "Oh, yeah, this came up last year. They're just made that way." (Has it been an entire year since they last sold one of these, I wondered.)

"Upside-down? This wasn't a mistake?" I asked.

"Yeah, they're just made that way," was the reply.

Now, every picture I've seen of this knife, including the one on the box has the insignia rightside-up. I mentioned this to the customer service rep to no avail.

Seems to me that Cold Steel employees screwed up, and rather than fix the cosmetic mistake, Cold Steel is going with, "They're just made that way." On principle, I'm sending it back, even if it would make a nice user. It just looks goofy, and I don't like folks who won't admit to a screw up.

Cold Steel doesn't make knives. I believe their slips are made by Cammillus.

My guess is it got screwed up in manufacture and was probably in distribution before anyone noticed.

If that was the case on a knife that inexpensive I can't say I disagree with the business decision. By the time they called them all back, repaired the shield and got them back out someone would probably be losing $10 a knife.

What would be nice is if they agreed to replace the knife for a proper one for those cusomers who voiced a complaint.

Good to know. I'm already getting a Moore Maker made by Camillus, so I feel even less attached to the Cold Steel now.

Exactly what I thought.

I'm not so anal as to worry about such things in a user, but thought it was worth a quick call to Cold Steel just to see what was up. If they had offered to replace the knife, I would have taken them up on it.

The attitude of the customer service rep put me off more than anything. If he had just said, "Yeah, Camillus messed up, but we couldn't afford to go back and correct the mistake, so we sold them as is," then I could have respected him for telling me the truth. Repeating "Yeah, they're just made that way" was a bit of an insult to my intelligence. Of course, it was made that way. What I wanted to know was why it didn't match any of the pictures I'd seen.

Well its made by camillus and unfortunately, its one of camillus' average cheap jobbers.

Emailed Cold Steel with the same question. They did admit it was an error at least and advised a little do-it-yourself:

Email at 11:45 a.m. -- "Unfortunately, our entire shipment of Classic Stockman's came with the logo upside down. You can easily remove the logo and rotate it 180 degrees. Thank you."
