I like Carbon V. I own two Cold Steel fixed blade hunters with it, and the stuff gets scary sharp and holds an edge. So when I ordered my Queen Cattle King, I also shelled out the cash for a Cold Steel large stockman.
The knife looked decent from a fit and finish perspective. Had some nice snap. Handle materials were cheap, but that's what you get when you order black "faux jigged bone" (ie. plastic) scales. What perplexed me was the Cold Steel logo inset. It was upside-down! That is, when you sat the knife on its springs (as you would any slipjoint), "COLD STEEL" is upside-down on this knife.
So I called Cold Steel to see if this was a manufacturer's defect. The customer service rep said something like, "Oh, yeah, this came up last year. They're just made that way." (Has it been an entire year since they last sold one of these, I wondered.)
"Upside-down? This wasn't a mistake?" I asked.
"Yeah, they're just made that way," was the reply.
Now, every picture I've seen of this knife, including the one on the box has the insignia rightside-up. I mentioned this to the customer service rep to no avail.
Seems to me that Cold Steel employees screwed up, and rather than fix the cosmetic mistake, Cold Steel is going with, "They're just made that way." On principle, I'm sending it back, even if it would make a nice user. It just looks goofy, and I don't like folks who won't admit to a screw up.
