CS American Lawman Question

The first and second 'generation' right after production did have stainless liners. The new model is basically the same as the second gen. but without liners being thicker G10 only. This is no real draw back though. Watch the video of the weight test. The knife is still quite strong even without liners.

I think it amazed everyone at what it can actually hold. It appears from the looks of it that further improvement was done to the lock itself on this third generation American Lawman folder. The lock rocker arm appears to sink deeper into the blade when it locks now, and it appears to have a half moon type grip feature on the blade where it slams the stop pin that was not as profound on earlier generations.

The current run has no liners, only G10.

I actually prefer the ergonomics and have yet to have any issue despite some rather strenuous treatment for a folding knife. Great work knife, just not the fastest open on the market.

ok, so strength is established. how about wear? does g10 wear faster than a steel liner? BTW, I'm already sold out on the triad lock.

If there were spots where friction was occurring I'd have to say yes but in the case of this design there is really nothing G10 that is moving. Even the pins inserted into the G10 are only rubbing that first time they are inserted in place or in the case of taking one apart and again putting it back together. Other than this there is no 'wear' to speak of other than pressure forces from steady pushing and shock. In this type of scenario the G10 compressive strength and ability to absorb that shock is actually quite good, great even. I believe it is safe to say that scratching may be possible and occur deeper when it happens with the G10 but even if one were scratched to beat all it would still remain very usable for a long time. By the time any wear occurred on the areas where the pins are inserted a long service life would have passed and since they are not moving parts they should last longer than most of the owners of the knives and still end up hand me down quality type life times. Considering that they are made quite well and with modern machining CNC precision so all the parts fit very well I'd have to say you have nothing to worry about with G10 wear on this design.

I understood the spacer/spring holder to be aluminum in these models that is anodized black. Correct me if that is wrong Andrew.

I was always curious about G-10 handles without liners on "hard use" knives. One of the criticisms I heard about the SNG, never owned one, was blade play developing because of wear on the pivot pin attachment on the G-10 scale. I guess time will tell.

This is not a dis on the Lawman. I have had one since they were first released. I am looking forward to trying the newer gen because I always felt that you did not get enough blade length for the weight with the original release. The new Recon 1 with the tri-ad looks great too. Still bummed they are discoing the original Voyager line. Talk about blade length to weight ratio :)

Well it seems I am also getting sucked into these new beastly folders and will be ordering a recon1 when I get off work. Does the recon have liners?

I understand that there are no moving parts made of g10 but what about around the pivot area where the tang or the ricasso or whatever else it's called contacts the g10 when the blade rotates? won't that part wear our faster and eventually cause blade play?

i got the older recon 1,it has slight blade play very slight but a workhorse of a knife...

Same here, mine is very old, the one with the Zytel handles and steel liners, very minor blade play after over a decade of hard use.

I have a recon 1 with the ultra lock it's quite rock solid and absolutely no blade play.that's why I want to look into getting either a lawman or another recon 1 with the triad lock but I'm not too sure about getting one without steel liners.

The new ones don't come out until next month :(

I don't think it will ever be an issue. The blade is not actually riding on G10 its riding on what appear to be thin nylon or teflon washers that separate the two surfaces of the blade and the G10. But even if it were the G10 the blade was riding on it would be set up much the same as many of the FRN folders with a built in raised area for the blade to spin on and that would be what wears some. The wear of two smooth surfaces moving slowly over each other causing no heat, or real friction between the two points could go on for many decades before any real noticed wear may even show up so by the time that were to occur I think it would be someone else worrying about the problem and not us. In short and not to come off as dismissive, its a non issue really to be concerned with.

Thanks, that makes up my mind. I'll be trying to get one of these. :D

Just got both an American Lawman and a new Recon 1 clip point last week!
Phenomenal ergonomics on each.

Decision to go with Solid G-10 handles was a good one IMO. Plus the new Lawman handle design has even better ergonomics, as the extra thickness near the butt allows for a better grip with my pinky, ring & middle fingers. Pretty good stuff.

Yeah Since Andrew started helping them out the knives have really taken a huge turn for the better IMO.

are those ones with triad locks?
