I was in a thrift store this afternoon and got a roll of Easton perforated leather sport grip for a buck. It is made for baseball bat grips and it has a peel-off tape built in, so it was a 3 minute job to wrap the handle of a Cold Steel Bushman. It looks like an expensive steering wheel cover and it feels great in the hand.

sweet wrap job dude looks cool

Thanks. It's dead simple-- peel the back off, wrap, and trim to suit. I reckon the ends might peel and I'll put a dab of polyurethane glue under if they do.

It gives a good grip and I'll bet it feels a lot better when it's cold. I had tried a paracord wrap and it was difficult with the slippery surface of the painted handle. It made the handle a little big for my taste too. I was going to try the rubber self-bonding tape others had recommended and then wrap with gutted paracord. I thought the leather was worth a try as it was only $1-- I like cheap experiments :)

it looks similar to the wrap job my wife has on hetr tennis racket...She's been giving it hard use for a couple of years and the wrap job has held up real nice.

It goes on much the same way as tennis racket grip, but it is thicker leather. The edges are tapered so it's easy to get a nice smooth surface if you pull it nice and snug and lap the edges just a bit as you go.

DaleW,

Excellent idea!! Thanks for sharing that one.

I'm sure that stuff has 1001 uses, and you just found 1002! ;)

Cool idea. Personally I still like good ol' hockey tape. I got some nice cammo stuff thats pretty esthetically appealing. What I like about it though is that you can make finger grooves and what not with it. Take care.

DaleW, that looks like a great idea. I'm working on a Bushman mod for someone this weekend, I'll be sure to show him this thread.

I like that idea, I have a bunch of that tape laying around and it would make good handle material for some of my neekid knives. Thanks for the tip

That wrap looks great. I wonder how it will stand up to water though. It certainly looks better than my rubber tape wrap covered with paracord. I would test it getting dunked to see if it holds up. You wouldn't want to reach for it in the rain and have it all unraveled. Mac

I agree, although that stuff hangs on through some pretty tough use in baseball. That's where I think that a little polyurethane glue on the ends would help-- it is waterproof glue. I thought a turk's head or other decorative knot at each end could help too.

I don't plan on carrying the knife on my belt, just in my pack, so I'm not too concerned about weathering. I carry an SAK Trekker in a pocket on a lanyard or an Entrek Javalina for a belt carry. I think of the Bushman as a mini-machete.

hi looks good.
My point I use rubber band (spare bike tire), so you can use as tinder.

Another thing to try is pachmyr "pacskin", pachmyr textured/checkered rubber/kraton(?) sheets with an adhesive back.Meant for gunstocks but should work for knives also.
:)

What about some kind of tooldip? Maybe with some kind of medium abrasive mixed in for grip? I think the added friction in the inside of the handle would be useful for a few things, too.

That's why they've been finding baseball half's all around the parks by Dale! Nice job, good tips thanx..

yeah someone mentioned bike tire tubes. they work great also, i use them on my 4 C-cell and my 2 D-cell maglites.
