Has anybody tried out the warranty on the Cold Steel Bushman? On the box it says crack, bend or break, would this include a badly chipped blade? If anyone has thoughts on this I'd love to hear them.

P.S. what about Mailing a large fixed blade from Maine to California are there any legality issues with this?

No legality issues. But, I would factor in shipping both ways for the knife. Hopefully someone with more experience in how cold steel handles these issues will chime in.

How big is the chip? I don't know anything about Cold steel's policies but if it can be sharpened out, it probably wouldn't be worth the shipping cost. The Bushman is only a little over $20 (great knife btw).
Can you get a picture of the chip?

I suggest before mailing anything, you take a good digital picture, call and talk to a person and see if they will let you email them the picture while you're on the phone with them.
shipping will run you close to $10 on a $25 knife - which is really important if they decide it's not a warranty issue.

also - they will want to see a copy of your purchase receipt or shipping invoice, since last I recall, their warranty only covers the first 12 months of ownership.

it should be legal to ship to CS. they are in ventura if im not mistaken. the only place you might have a problem shipping to would be napa, marin, and yolo counties. they have stricter laws restricing knives.

Is this new & did you just buy it in a brick & mortar store? If so, just return or exchange it.

By writing "badly chipped blade", were you abusing the knife?

Personally, with such a cheap knife, I'd just sharpen it myself.

just sharpen the hell out of it and don't do whatever chipped it badly. Instead of wasting shipping money that is half the worth, buy another and use the old one as hard as you like.

I thought these were pretty soft, I'd sure like to hear how it chipped!

The chipping was completely my own fault(rocks) and could probably be sharpened by somebody who knows what they are doing. The warranty does say "no questions asked" and since the local knife shop is closed for the season I thought this might be a easy way to fix it. If I can't find somebody to sharpen it, it is certainly cheap enough for a new one, probably not much more then the shipping.

Dude--you said you were from Maine and the shop you got it from is closed for the season...did you get it in Bar Harbor at Jekyll & Hyde? I'm one of the knife guys there.

yep I was in there a bunch last summer, I picked up a Benchmade 960 and obviously a Bushman. so this must be Ben, Matt or Chris?

I would call Cold Steel directly, their customer service is very helpful:

Customer Service:

You could also post your question on the Cold Steel forum, which is pretty good if you are into CS:

PS I didn't know there was a knife shop in BH--whereabouts? We try to get down there at least once a year.

It's Ben. Matt and Chris aren't into this stuff obsessively enough to join a forum. :p I'm up in Orono right now, but if you happen to be in the area I can try sharpening the chip out for ya' :)

Mr. Bad Example: It's right in downtown Bar Harbor next to the chocolate shop on Main Street. My manager has us charge full MSRP on knives, but if I'm working the day you come in just tell me you're from the forums and I'll hook you up with a deal. :D

Thanks! Will certainly try to pop in next summer to check it out.

Ha!!!!! how's it going man, its Eben. I thought by the Rat logo it was probably you but I wasn't sure. small world eh? yeah so the one you sold me with the Presidio a while back, I put it on the end of a stick and used it to clear some tall grass and stuff. it worked great but unfortunately there were lots of rocks under the grass an I was not all that careful. The chipping does not make the knife useless but it does piss me off enough so I don't use it. I have tried to sharpen it with a sharpmaker but I need something more aggressive. Anyway you should Email me your number and next time I'm up that way I'll give you a call.

P.S. that paracord wrap you showed me is the tits!

Summer on Sebago here. Guess I now have a reason to check out Bar Harbor.

Oh and maybe a meetup. Had one at my place last year for another forum and it was a blast. Plus got to see a bunch of sharp stuff!

Glad you've been enjoying it! My guess is it's probably just a ding in the blade, not a chip. The steel is done at a spring temper, so it'll handle impact real well as a whole. Info sent, btw. While you're waiting I'm sure folks would like to hear your thoughts on that Ti Spyderco Sage of yours. ;):D

Well problem solved. you can't beat that with a stick. anybody coming to the MDI area in the summer be sure to stop by Jekell & Hyde, and see Ben, he's the man! and yes that Sage Ti is just to perfect for words smoothest strongest folder I have seen yet, and killer looks. Again props to Ben for the hookup.
