CS Canadian Belt Knife

An inexpensive hollowground copy of a superior classic. Lynn Thompson is going to wake up some day to somebody copying the few original, and often good ideas he's marketed complete with a demo video of it being stabbed into a old Yugo by some heavy jowled character named Boris. Buy a Russell.

The thumb ramp serrations are pretty sharp, but overall it's on par with a Frost. The sheath is horrible.:D

hey hatchet.. how goes it...:D

i liked the looks of that one too.... for the price i was a bit skeptical..... that roach bellied knife doesn't look too bad either.....

ahh, those buggers taking a design, I bet it works, but whynot give your money to the folks in nova scotia who really deserve your $$.

hence the term "cold steal" . grossly overpriced her4e in aus . my local knife shop has a san mai trailmasters for $700 aussie dollars ($559 USD!)

What a rip-off.

The original (Grohmann) DH Russell belt knives are terrific, and real classics. They are also well made, manufactured locally in Pictou NS, and feature rosewood handles as standard (though you can upgrade to more exotic materials). My Russell no. 1 sees use every day, as one of my main kitchen knives, and it frequently appears in my gear for day hikes or other light outings. The handle is comfortable and the blade retains a terrific edge. You can opt to purchase a flat-ground version of the knife, which some people prefer. Grohmann knives come with leather sheaths, as opposed to cordura.

This Cold Steel version is a shoddy knock-off, 'inspired' by a classic traditional design. They are well within their rights to make such imitations, but I would feel cheapened if I were to purchase one. It's not as though Grohmann is no longer operational, anyways; they still manufacture the original designs, and their prices are quite reasonable. I'd rather spend my knife money supporting a small-scale designer-manufacturer than on a made-in-China (I assume - correct me if I'm wrong) replica.

From the Grohmann website, discussing the 50th anniversary of their original DH Russell belt knife:

Back in 1957 the first D.H. Russell Original Design belt knife was finally elevated from being made on a custom basis into the production stage. As many collectors know and possess in their collection, the first 20 years the Original Design was produced each blade was stamped with the registered trademark year of 1957. Now 50 years later they are still being manufactured by the same family in the same town in the same traditional way. As busy as things are, due to the great amount of loyal customers asking for an anniversary knife, the family is proud to finally introduce this beautiful variation of the original.

This is the sort of knifemaking business that I'm happy to support.

My $0.02 CDN,

- Mike

This is how it starts. Cheap knockoffs kill off good knife companies. Go do a search here on the demise of Schrade and Camillus. Don't get me wrong i love cheap knives too but i don't buy rip-off knives. If you really want an inexpensive but quality knife thats not a ripoff get a Frost Mora or one of the other scandi knives. Otherwise if you must have a Grohmann then buy a real one.

I really like some of cold steel's products such as the trailmaster, master hunter, ultimate hunter, and the voyagers, but honestly, the canadian belt knife does not look like a good one. Go with the russell

Damn! From those pics, those thumbs serrations look VERY uncomfortable. They look more like actual cutting serrations.
