Is the set screw in the CS Hawks necessary? I'm thinking of ordering one, and I'd like to just fill that hole with a decorative pin or something. Thanks.

Not necessary, and lots of people just throw it away. Be sure to file the eye of the ax so it wont scar up the haft. The set screw sorta limits the "options" that you have with this hawk, i.e. you cant take the head off if you want to that easily.

How tight should the head be on the haft? Would setting it like a baseball bat weight do? Or do I need to get a mallet and really snug it on there?

With mine, once I tossed the set screw and filed down the burrs and sharp edges on the inside of the eye, one good upside down whack on a stump or block of wood sets it nicely every time. Same to take it off. I also slightly rounded out the top inside of the eye for a better fit.

My technique is, pitch the stupid screw, file the eye nice and clean the pound the haft into the eye. Hafts shrink in the dryness of winter and swell a bit in the summer, I reset my hafts in the Spring when it's still dry then it stays on in the summer when the air is moist.

Best regards

I don't worry about that. It's always moist here. :D
