which is better for carry/defense, the CS kobun (carbon V) or
the Newt Livesay "UJI", views/reasons????

While the Uji is probably a better quality knife, and has the "advantage" (until you end up in court) of a bent blade for more devastating cuts on flesh, it also has absolutely no guard. The Kobun has a minimal, but existing, guard. Unless you practice a defensive style that does not involve direct stabs, the lack of a guard to prevent cutting off your own fingers can be a liability in an actual confrontation. This is less of a problem if you are using reverse grip, with the thumb on the butt of the blade.

EDIT: Handle. I meant to say "thumb on the butt of the HANDLE."

i like the looks of the UJI and you can get a IWB holster i found out thanks to the forum, i am very concerned about the lack of a guard, i don't think a defensive thrust would dislodge my grip (the blade would glance off a hard target-ribs/bones) but a solid guard is comforting and allows you to hit full force. i know japanese tanto usually don't have a guard.

If you give Newt a call or send him an e-mail, he will be more than willing to put a guard on your Uji for a additional nominal fee...I've seen Uji pics online someplace put up by someone who did just that, and it looked really cool--plus no worries about riding up onto the blade with a hard thrust! :D

I believe he has a sale on knives right about now, too...worth a shot to check, yeah? http://www.Newt.Livesay.com I own a few of his knives, (a US Marshal, a Company Knife, a Celt, and a Woo...and am expecting an Air Assault any day now! :) ) and they are some of my favorites--he works with a variety of steels, etc., and is even willing to construct blunted trainers of his knives for you out of either steel or synthetic! :D Now isn't that awesome? :D

In short, WKC Knives all the way! :D

Peace,

The Uji is a nice little carry knife that lends itself to reverse grip especially. I carry mine in a horizontal belt rig as vertical carry jabs me in my dunlap (belly done lapped over my belt.)
Newt's knives aren't pretty but they are very solidly built, with ergonomically good handles and they are an outstanding value for the money.
And no, I don't have any financial interest in WKC, and I don't work for Newt, I'm just a fan and been poor long enough to know a good deal when I see one.

Fudo -- that's hilarious. While not given to naming too many of my body parts, I love dunlap! LMAO!

Also, really like your quote in your signature. Do you know where that came from?
