I've searched past threads about this knife, just seeing what the current rate is. I'm looking at this knife cause I want a smaller fixed blade with 4-4.5 inch. Already have a timberline pitbull, and need something a little bigger. I plan to use the kobun at work, and when I go on road trips, or shooting. What I want to know is, is this knife sharp, if you stab into something with your hand slip right over the grip, and is it comfortable to wear?

I've had a Kobun for a couple of years now, and I like it. Although it is a little light-weight for a general use knife IMHO. It does take a wicked edge, so much so that it's sort of been relegated to kitchen use (hacks up meat & veggies real nice). Personally I've never liked carrying knives with a kraton handle, I much prefer micarta or G-10 because it's a little less sticky.

I think you can do better than a Kobun - how about camillus CQB3 or 4 in carbon steel?

I have an AUS8 Kobun and it is a good knife for the money and one of the sharpest knives I've had right out of the box. They have been discontinued but IIRC they are still available from the Special Projects catalog. They do have it in Carbon V which would be my first choice.

Last year I ordered a Buck Vanguard with an ATS-34 blade from Bass Pro Shops. The price wasn't much higher than for a 420HC Vanguard. Don't know if they are still available, but it would be worth checking into. The Vanguard has a Kraton handle and long brass guard, so I don't think there is any chance of ones hand slipping forward in a stab.

If carbon steel is acceptable, there are some Marble's knives in the size range you describe. The ones with Gamegetter handles have long lower guards, so the grip should be very secure.

Well, actually I am not sure if the latest Marble's knives have carbon steel. The old ones were 52100 carbon. Marble's now uses a different steel they call Alchemite. I don't know if it is carbon or stainless.

I wear my Kobun IWB as one of my EDC's,fixed blade.I love it,razor sharp and I like the LWGHT because it does'nt pull my pants down.;)I practice draws and thrusting into a thick cardboard target. My hand has never slipped.

W.T. Beck,

Alchemite MC is Marbles' way of saying "0170-6". It's a non-stainless similar to the 0170-6C of Camillus and the Carbon V of Cold Steel. However, despite their convex-edged goodness, the Marbles knives don't look as tantoish as the Kobun which might be an esthetic problem.

I met a guy at my local dealer who was carrying a CS Kobun with serrated edge. I don't remember the exact facts of th estory, but he cut a guy who was in th eprocess of stealing his vehicle about halfway through his forarm. That's not bad for such a lightweight knife!

i really liked my kobun as it was a lot of knife that was super easy to carry. took a great edge as well. ended up selling it as i didn not want to run amuck of the 2.5" blade length limit here in chicago. wish i coulda carried it without worries as it was fantastic!!
