Hey guys so I'm looking for a solid EDC folder knife after buying some nice fixed blade knives for going out in the brush or everyday use (CS Bushman) and a machete (Ontario knife 22 inch). Im looking at the CS Kudu vs. the CS pocket bushman.

I've read reviews on both, and they both seem to be really solid knives for the money but which one should I go for between these 2? I know they are both 4116 but the bushman has the tri-ad lock system but the Kudu is cheaper. After shipping the Kudu will come to $9 and the Pocket bushman will come to $35.

I need your experience in this please. Do you think the extra $20 on the bushman is worth it for a basic EDC folder? Is the bushman a lot stronger and longer lasting than the KUDU?

Any advice would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!

I'd spend the extra $ and get the bushman, and since you're going to be using it out in the brush it's fair to say you're tasks for the knife won't be as forgiving as say, a city boy like me's EDC uses ;).

Also another folder to consider would be the American Lawman or Recon 1. Those are great hard use folders for the cash!

Thanks for the advice man. In what way is the bushman better than the kudu? Is it just stronger overall?

As for the other folders, I'm really trying to go for budget knives probably sub $30.

The Kudu is pretty small compared to the Bushman. It's more of a light to medium user, and the bushman a medium to heavy. At least its supposed to be. There are reviews on youtube of the lock failing, and the blade cracking.

The Pocket Bushman is so strong it's hard to close. :) It really is heavy duty and may be bigger than you need for a utility knife, even in the woods. But it is very well built and is comfortable to hold. I've never handled the Kudu.

If you get the lock to break or the blade to fail, you are doing something absolutely idiotic.

I have seen the video by the moron struggling to snap the blade. He had to pound it into a log with another log and twist it again and again. Off angle impacts, and wrenching bending twists to get it to break.

If you are trying to use a folder as he did, you are doing something wrong, and the short bus is the place for you. Add a drool rag, and a helmet, and an "atta boy" every time you manage not to crap your pants.

Big vote for the pocket bushman.

Just be careful with your fingers, and you will be fine.

Strong design. Great flat grind for slicing ease. Pointy fine tip.

The Pocket Bushman is my EDC. It takes getting used to because of its unusual mechanism and it's a little stiff for the first week or two of use, but it's a fantastic hard-use folder for not a lot of money. Try it! You'll like it! [standardbladeforumsanswer]However, with how cheap the Kudu is, why not get both?[/standardbladeforumsanswer] :D:D:D

Ya, you know what I'm kind of thinking of getting both FortyTwoBlades... lol. What I figured though was maybe I could just buy Kudu and save some money (I'm a poor student)... but it might be worth having the pocket bushman because I like the larger size.

I would guess the blades would perform similarly since they are the same steel unless the bushman has better heat treat or something.

They have different blade geometries, and the Kudu is thinner. The locking mechanism on the Pocket Bushman is absolutely bomb-proof, and once the bolt/tang junction wears smooth it's easy to open one-handed. The Kudu takes a little more creativity to open one handed, but it's doable. If I really had to pick between the two I'd go with the PB hands down, but the Kudu is still nice and it's so cheap it's almost silly NOT to have one. :p

Ok 42 and everyone else, thanks for your advice. I decided to buy both. :P

I guess it makes this thread useless but it still helped me decide.

These are two different knives for generally different applications. The Kudu is a thin blade 'slicer' that is at home around the camp kitchen for slicing meat, vegies, pointing sticks, et al. The Pocket Bushman is a beast of a knife with a very secure lock that turns a folder into a virtual fixed blade.

The Krup 4116 steel as used in both the knives will take a very fine edge, resists corrosion very well and is easy to touch-up when dull. My Kudu knives don't owe me a thing and get used far more often than many of my other knives. Some may complain of difficulty in closing these knives, but if you follow the directions, they are just as safe as any other knife.

As the Kudu and Pocket Bushman are two of the best values out there, I would just get both.

Edit - Doh! Too late.
