The last few months I have been nosing around for a decent fixed blade to carry in the car with me. Reason being is that last April with my daughter in the car we experienced a road rage incident. Now I have a ccw permit and have had for 27yrs. or so. Thing is I wasn't carrying at the time but I did have with me my trusty 710 clipped to my right front pocket. Had a devil of a time trying to get it unclipped in case the dork came through the window. He didn't so bottom line alls well that ends well. Y'all have to understand that this situation happened in less than a minute from start to finish. Awareness of surroundings would have helped me here.

Here is where I have been thinking a fixed blade located somewhere under the dash of the car. Quicker access and alot less effort to reach. Hence me stumbling onto a fixed blade I have had in my Catquiver for several yrs. It is where I keep it for hunting. That is the above mentioned MasterHunter. This thing first of all is without any exaggeration the sharpest fixed blade I have ever had in my hands. Even now after several yrs in the quiver and just with the occasional touchup from use on whitetails. The knife is scarry sharp. So I am thinking to myself this just may be what I am looking for. It has the leather sheath so probably kydex is in order or maybe if I can some way figure out how to mount the thing under dash I can just eliminate one of the pull straps. Any suggestions on this part would be helpful. I obviously want it discreetly hidden but easily accesable. The knife itself has a very ergonomic handle with the grippy texture and the palm swell. Also the dynamics of the blade itself, sharp distill taper and a thing shearing edge and the Carbon V steel are outstanding.

I was thing initially too of taking the handle off and putting on G10 slabs with some traction tape, but that would be a pain and the effort to get the handle off may not be worth the effort. It seems to be the correct size for what I am looking for in a knife of this type. It is fairly inexpensive even now and as stated scary sharp. What do all you formites think. There are times when I can't carry my .45 and times when I just don't feel like it. Well thanks for the time and keep'em sharp.

PS it seems reasonable to me that the city in which I live that maybe at least in the cold months a clip it knife in the pocket my have some merit.ie) instead of the pants pocket.

The MAster Hunter is a very underrated knife. It has a full distal taper on 3/16" stock with a full flat grind. This gives a bit of strength near the base and a very, very fine tip for delicate work.

I detest Kraton handles, crappy sheaths and thick edges (the CS was not too bad here, it was a little on the thick side, but very well aligned and a very nice level of polish.)

I sent mine to Blademan13 to be refitted. At my request he used Natural color micarta and an integral guard. He put a full height convex grind on the knife and polished the edge with Lee Valley green compound to a mirror finish.

He also had the knife fitted with a nice pouch sheath, perfect for outdoors carry.

This knife forms one of the corner stones of my outdoors knife battery.

With a good axe (GB SFA) for chopping, a Scandanvian style knife (Karesuando Raven here, but the Helle Fjellkniven is a favorite too) for woodcraft, a LM Pulse and SAK for utility tasks and I am all set.

To be honest though, this would not be my first choice for a defensive fixed blade. For that I want a very secure grip, and a different sort of balance. If I was looking for a knife for defensive purposes I would probably look at the MAd Dog line of knives by Kevein Mcclung. He has a forum here:
www.tacticalforums.com

To be specific I would get the Bearcat or Arizona Hunter models.

I would also look at some of the excellent knives by Trace Rinaldi and Jerry Hossom.

Jim,

Yep, it is a Karesuando Raven in Carbon Steel. If you are a stainless fan the Helle Fjellkniven is another great one. Personally that Raven is my fave.
All my Scandanavian knives come from Ragnar at www.ragweedforge.com

Jamie is just a fantastic guy to deal with and his work is top notch too!

These two knives make a wonderful combination. Here are some more pics for your viewing pleasure.

The Master Hunter is one of my favorite blades. The kraton handle isn't pretty, but it's one of the best when your hands are cold or when you're field dressing and it gets covered with fat and blood. Blademan 13 sure did a nice job, though!

Heres what I carry in my truck.Cold Steel Trailmaster.Ironwood scales from my good friend and knifemaker,J.P Holmes.Sorry it is a bit dark.

I hate to be the one to point this out, but there is no point in having a ccw if you are not carrying. That said, I have a WOO, by Newt Livesay. I hang it over the top of the steering column by wrapping the neck cord on the turn signal stalk, on the left. It hangs right by your keys. It's a very sturdy knife, takes a wicked edge, It's cheap enough to leave in the car all the time and a 3" blade is legal almost everywhere.

Hey Longbow...

Hey fellas thanks for all the info. Normark I am going to email you. As for not carrying when I have a CCW well my kids do a ton of school activities, read that as sports, clubs, and all manner of stuff. It happened when I was taking my daughters best friend home from picking them up from school. No carrying on school grounds at all. So that said when I pick my kids up from school I don't carry. Truth be known I live a suburb now and don't have to deal with much of what I used to have to deal with except in this one instance. Keep'em sharp

LOL...Sorry Longbow, it's no laughing matter that you were almost a victim of road rage. I had a confrontation earlier in the year and I know it's no laughing matter. But I just have this funny visual of seeing someone desperately trying to unclip their knife in a critical situation like Don Knotts as Barney Fife trying to unholster his gun. I laugh, but I'm glad neither you nor your family members were hurt.

Your story has made me look at my own weaknesses (strategically speaking) if a similar incident should happen to me.

Admittedly, I don't think I would fair any better since I drive with my door unlocked, and I've gone back to carrying my old SOG Magnadot as an EDC. This particular model doesn't have a pocket clip so I carry it in my back pocket -- which isn't easily accessible while in a sitting position. You've made me say, "Hmmmmmmmm."

However, I have ordered a very inexpensive 4" bladed Camillus boot dagger (I don't care too much about the steel if it's just for self defense) which is fashioned after the Applegate/Fairbairn dagger. I may start carrying it in addition to my EDC and kubotan if I find it is not too uncomfortable strapped on my ankle, or as a neck knife.

You may also consider an inexpensive Cold Steel Bushman hunting knife. That way if your car is ever broken into, it won't matter if it's stolen since it's so cheap. As with my Camillus boot knife, hopefully I'll never have to use it so who cares if it isn't D2 steel with carbon fiber handles? It just has to be tough, sharp, and accessible.

I just have misgivings about keeping a large knife in my car in case I'm pulled over for a minor traffic violation. As Ricky Ricardo would say, I would have some "splainin" to do to the police officer if he/she should see it.

I don't know there has to be an easier way to access a weapon be it gun or whatever when sitting in a car. The 710 was just plain hard to get to what with the shoulder harness and seat belt combo. I also didn't want my daughter unduly alarmed anymore than what she already was. I darn near made the foolish mistake of exiting the vehicle to confront the dope. He was screaming she was yelling for me to just drive. It was a red light with the oncoming traffic having a green arrow. The biggest weapon I had was the car and thought seriously of using it if he tried to come through the window also. He didn't come over to my side but stayed on my daughters.

Funny thing is is that I normally carry my .45 most of the time. But with picking her and her friend up from school I just won't take a chance on being pulled over near a school with my hand gun or pistol.
As for a knife in a car I would definetly tell the P.O. about it if I was ever stopped. I know years ago I was pulled over by a Trooper and heard the information come back that I had a valid pistol permit for concealed carry. Didn't get a ticket but he asked me if I had the gun on or in the vehicle. I didn't so no big deal. After that I tell'em. I don't know I ain't one for carrying a knife for s.d. but I think to have access to something when you may need it is a good idea. I also know that sheath knives with I think blades of 6" are legal for carry in NY. Same goes for folding knives except in NYC. Still can't carry there. Keep'em sharp

PS when I arrived home from this incident I called the local authorities and they arrested this fella. They even knew who he was just by the description of his van.

Hatchet.., or fighting Axe.., under the dashboard..., no substitute...lol.

Rather than using a knife (or your .45) to deal with road rage problems, have you thought of pepper spray? A good pepper spray will give you the chance to get the hell out of there without the high price of a lawyer and possible jail time.

Once again thanks everyone for the info. Akabu I checked out the site
link. Very interesting indeed. I have been thinking about it quite alot as of late. Not that I didn't think of it alot before but now the order of protection is waived as it has run out. I know the fella knows where I live but as the P.O. said he may not be smart enough to realize that it was my address on the O.P. the judge assigned. That and his attorney didn't point out anything of the sort to him.

So here is what I am going to be doing. I am going to continue to carry a clip it folder of some sort in my jeans. Just can't seem to get along without one I have had for so long. The one in the car will be anyone of several models but am leaning towards my CS Voyager xlg. to have placed in the center console of my car. It is going to stay there. The thing is big, lite, and has a sharpness that only my CS's have. I was going to go the fixed blade route but I have had this one lying around for ever and I am famaliar with it. It is so easy to use and if it ever got stolen I ain't out alot of money. Keep'em sharp.
