Hi Guys

Does anyone know if the CS oyabun has a full tang or not?
I and said knife will be going in harm's way in near future, so I need to know if it will stand up to twisting and lateral torsion in it's intended use, ie stabbing and twisting

I very much doubt it.

Their premium Natchez Bowie doesn't have a full tang.

If you're going to rely on the blade to protect your life, you might want to consider some other alternatives.

Ranger Knives and Grayman Knives are both well-respected with military users and don't cost an arm and a leg.

The lack of a full-length tang in the Natchez doesn't mean other CS knives don't have full-length tangs. Many of them do. The Oyabun was made in the days CS pushed for full tangs as an important feature in a fixed blade.

It would be difficult to make a partial tang knife with a kraton handle and have it unnoticed.

The Oyabun is basically a large Kobun, and IMO the main purpose is to have a large, very lightweight fighting knife and not something for utility. They have many other knives that would be better suited as combat-utility knives.

It most likely has a full-length tang, but for a definite answer it is best to email Cold Steel since few people have x-rayed their Oyabuns or cut off their kraton handles.

When you think about it, a dedicated fighter does not need to have the same durability as a utility or survival blade, either. A utility knife, especially a large outdoors knife, can expect to see much harder use than will a knife carried explicitly for cutting or stabbing a human being in self-defense.

In fact, if its purely for SD, you'll probably be better off with an ice-pick. ;)

Should come in handy in the desert. :D

I do find it weird though when people consider the prying ability of a knife when shopping for one...

Surely there's room in the Abrams for a prybar???

Thanks guys,

It's solely for stabbing, not general purpose.
I used an Al mar dagger, 1980's vintage for this in the past and the blade flexed when it hit bone on a strike deflected by the other guy's arm, even though it had a full tang, so I learned my lesson on tangs.
That dagger blade is a little too short for my liking, hence the CS oyabun.

Do you stab people alot?

Do I stab people a lot?
Only when I can't shoot them.......
I've been in UKSF since 1980's and we' ve been very busy

If you're looking at Cold Steel, Go for the Taipan. It's a double-edged dagger with a good sturdy blade, the sheath sucks though.

For stabbing purposes why not go with the Urban Dart, the Safe Makers, or one of the Counter Tacs? All triangular cross-sections that would be stellar in that regard. Kind of sucks that you'd have to use them for that, but if that's what you're looking for those would be my recommendations.
