Recently, I recieved a used Cold Steel Pendleton full size fixed blade. It was dull as a hoe when I got it, so I put a nice edge on it with an Edge Pro Apex.

The result was amazing! The relatively cheap user was scary sharp, so I started using it as an EDC. The edge lasts pretty long. All I had to do is a couple of touch ups with a ceramic rod to get it hair popping sharp again.

Granted, I am not dressing game with it, as it was designed to do, but I use it every day to break down cardboard, cut plastic shipping straps, and anything else I come across. Because I was not out a lot of cash on a nice new knife, I wasn't really worried about scratching and chipping, so I never really took care of it the way I would with one of my other knives. This was a pure user, and I must say it is a pretty good piece.

I would like to hear from anyone else who has used one of these, good or bad. That being said, I do not want a bunch of "Cold Steel sucks because the owner is an &*^$#$#" We have all heard it before, and this thread is not about the whole company, just the Pendleton.

Both the large and small CS Pendletons are decent knives. The AUS-8 does take a pretty good edge, but will need to be touched up with use. No biggie there. For an EDC, it will be more than adequate. It should be a good hunter too if you go that route. Personally, I am not a fan of kraton handles... but some people like them. I had the small one, and gave it as a gift. The larger is more suitable for your use. Enjoy it, it's certainly good enough.

This knife is the best bang for the buck fixed blade hunting knife. Ergonomics/balance of this blade is superb. Only have experience with the AUS 8 older model and can definitely give this steel its props. I don't know if its only with this knife's lot but the heat treat must have been spot on, as this knife skinned out 2 Axis deer and 2 Mouflon sheep and still shaved!!! My other Aus 8 experiences have not been this glowing though. A couple of hunters in the group who witnessed this bought their own but in VG10 so I don't know about those :)

Mine is the AUS 8 also. I have never thought that AUS 8 & 6 were really as bad as some people seem to think. I will also say that I "used" to think I could sharpen freehand pretty good, until I got the Apex sharpener. It has shone a new light on a lot of my old users.

I have the ultimate hunter, which is the large Pendleton blade in a folding knife. Mine is an AUS 8A blade, came very sharp. It is heavy for a pocket knife because there are steel slabs in the handle, but it is not as heavy as the fixed blade version.

The blade shape is a good design, AUS 8 is a good material. Cardboard is hard on an edge. Cardboard has these wood fibers, silica, who knows what else in the stuff. Animal hide/flesh will not wear down an edge like cardboard. If you are getting good edge retention with AUS 8 on cardboard, then it is a good steel.

Lots of knife makers use or have used AUS8 steel. I don’t know why folks claim it is no good. Seems to work just fine.
