Hi TTpower, I've owned a couple of CS Recon 1's. I believe current versions are available with AUS8 blades and G10 handles (like the original made in Japan versions) but the ones I owned where Taiwan-made had Zytel handles and 440A blades. Nothing to wow over. I had a drop/spear point half serrated version and a tanto plain edge version and both were solid as far as lockup was concerned, but they were no different than other similar knives by other manufacturers (ie, SOG). The locking mechanism is similar to Benchmade's Axis lock and thus works the same way. I liked the feel of the Recon 1 and the smooth opening action, but I didn't care much for the teflon coating (which won't last very long if you use the knife) and I hated the small pocket clip. Personally, even with G10 handles and an AUS8 blade I find the CS Recon 1 to be way overpriced. AUS8 isn't a bad steel, but you can do much better considering for a knife with an AUS-8 blade. Given the choice, I'd look elsewhere for a better knife.

Pare',

Politics aside, try it, you'll like it! If you can find an early Japan version even better. The blade profile is much nicer in the earlier version, with a slight belly to it and a nice hollow grind. The handle scales are also very much slimmer and don't print as much as the newer version. Look for the blade that says "Made in Japan". Sometimes they can be found on eBay. You can also remove the black coating on the blade and you will find a nice smooth finish underneath, and with a little work will take a nice polished finish. You'll also like the axis style lock. The pocket clip, albeit small, is strong and will keep the blade in place. The Recon-1 rides a little higher in the pocket, but that was by design for easier access, and if you are wearing gloves giving you more to grab. The newer models are no slouch either, but they are beefier, the scales are chunkier and the blade has more of a straight edge to it. The pocket clip is also thinner on the newer versions. Indeed there is much diversity in the price point of the CS Recon-1 but if you like it, why not?

I have a recon-1 that I have used for a couple years now.

+ The lock is really handy. Very accessible by your thumb, opens nice and smooth and locks solid.

+ Mine was hair splitting sharp when it came out of the box.

+ The feel of the knife is great for my hand.

- the teflon coating is horrible, rubs off in no time.

- the paint on the pocket clip rubbed off in no time.

- The edge retention is sub par I think, mine has never been the same since.

I paid around 100 for mine tax incl cdn. They have gone up about 20 dollars since. Decent knife all in all.. more of a pocket carry for light duty because of the teflon rubbing off.

Mine was a taiwan model.
