Hello, I'm new to these forums.I got a recon 1 today. I got it at a local gun shop. I only had 100$. My choices where slightly limited. They had spyderco enduras, frn and ss, They had the crkt m-16 line and those m18 with the red g-10 inserts. The prices for most of the knives where 59 to 70$ then jumped to around 90 to 100$ then jumped to 150 to 200$. They had benchmade too but they had the cheap red class that where 30 to 40$ then they had the Rucus and the others around 200$. They had the Skirmish too. 220$.Too much for me. They had the NRA knife that looks just like the Osborne for 69. Maybe I should have got that and had some money left. I just needed a REALLY tough folder for work and maybe SD if I had too.. The crkt knives where great but the liners where super thin. And to be that thin for such a big knife. The spyderco enduras where ok but the ss would be way to slippery if wet and the frn was too flimsy feeling. I love the G-10 on the recon-1 and the blade is thick and sharp. The ultra lock, I guess a copy of the Axis lock seems to be the strongest lock you can get. It had absolutely NO blade play. It's real big too and thats what I was looking for. it reminds me of a Big CQC-7 with a grippier handle and an Axis lock. So not being able to order of the net and having limited funds did I make a good choice?I just needed I big super strong folder. I think I made a good choice. Aside from the things said about Cold steel on here, just Taking the Recon-1 and compareing it to what I mentioned ,was it a good choice for a big super strong thick tough folder with a strong lock for 90$. and they have a 30 day return so if I screwed up I can get something else. thanks in advance. Sorry so long too.

Well here's the deal. I own 2 of them in g10. A tanto and a clip point. Bought the tanto first and the clip second. I bought them on line so paid 50 bucks for the clip point shipped and a bit more for the tanto shipped. That not withstanding, these are very very excellant folders. I don't know what the cryo treatment does to the aus8a blades but it does something. actually I read what it does, just makes the steel tougher. Put it this way I have been carrying the clip point for about a month when I am home and on my scoot. For 50 bucks you won't find a better knife out there.( period)!

People slam CS for there advertising crap and well I for one don't like it either but some of there stuff is excellant. I have a second year issue Master Hunter in O1 that is as good a hunting knife as one could ask for. I also keep a Recon Scout next to the bed with my .45acp under the night stand, just below it. You made an excellant choice and don't let anyone tell ya different. keepem sharp

Don't worry its a good knife. If you don't have the big bucks to put out on a bm or spiderco. Cs is a good choise to go for. I have one and have no complaints. most of the negatives about cs are more about the owner and his advertising habits, than the knives. I have about 15 cs knives, axes, machetes, ect and have yet to have one fail or break. I don't pry or hack bricks or even trees down with the knives. (got an axe for that) but in cutting they serve the purpose. I just used my kobun to make dinner the other night. The recon 1 has a big handle which is good for my big hands and the lock is really tough and allows for easy opening and closing. The slim profile allows for easy carry. My ever day carry I don't use to cut things so the blade is razor sharp when needed, but the other knives I do use hold their edges really good. So, for the money you made the right choice.

You did o.k. I hope you didn't throw down a whole C note on one though. Got a Recon 1 tanto on a whim several weeks back and I'm liking it. It is big and looks designed to fill the SD niche.

I carry smaller folders for the EDC stuff and the Recon 1 is there mainly as a large backup.

FYI- I use the CS Voyagers for daily utility blades and they have fit the bill as well as any Spyderco or BM that I have. You may want to look at the 4" clip point next time.

I know a lot of people on this forum hate COLD STEEL knives. I have several BENCHMADE, SPYDERCO, EMERSON and many other production brand knives that I own but for my job at a movie studio, where I do every kind of cutting you can imagine I have been using a COLD STEEL RECON 1, for the last year or so. I paid $52.00 for it online and the knife has held up extremely well. The knife is a real work horse for the small amount of money that I paid.

Have an early "Japan" version in tanto. This thing has taken a beating and then some and is still rock solid! The Recon 1 fills the bill for many edc needs and for the price point it's as good as it gets! Have fun with this one!

Matador-
