I've always loved the design of the CS Recon Scout...I hate alot about CS as a company but that is a different story. The only thing that really holds me back from just getting one is all the complaints about failure at the hilt. I just can't stand the thought of having one fail when I needed it.

So...what else is there like it?

All what complaints?

There was one knife that failed..... And that was an older model. ;)

To break a Recon Scout you have to be trying to break it.

Geesh, I have heard several horror stories. Maybe my fears are unwarranted? I'd even spring for the San Mai one if CS had a Busse like warranty.

Horror stories by parrots who have never owned one and they all use the same story talking about the same knife. ;)

The Recon Scout will serve you well, no need to worry about it.

I have known well over 20 folks who have used Trailmasters and Recon Scouts for many years. These are men who have used them heavily in wilderness, military and survival uses. Many have literaly beat the hell out of their knives. i have not seen one failure in any of these mens knives.

If you can find an older Carbon V one on the exchange then buy it, otherwise the SK5 ones are excellent as well.

I had a Trailmaster which I have since sold. Not due to any failing of the knife itself b ut I just didn't warm to the kraton handle.

Buy one without fear.

Thanks for the info guys!

So the Carbon V is preferable to the SK5?

SK-5 is very good steel, but if you can find a Carbon V vers for a reasonable price then go for it.

I have had both and SM III and you really can't go wrong with any of them.

Not the same but similar. I have had a Recon Tanto for a very long time and abuse the heck out of it at work, everything from prying open doors, windows and floor boards to digging holes, cutting branches and pounding through hard salami. :D It's not only for work but pleasure.
