Cold Steel Recon Tanto or the KA-BAR Tanto

which would you reccomend? both are inside my budget. are there any others in a similar vein i should consider?

intended use: general utility blade while bowhunting for game from bunnies to feral pigs.

thanx in advance for your help. i just found these forums and they seem like the place i've been looking for.

The cold steel is OK, but I think that KABAR uses the tougher steel. Only edge I could give the CS, is that the handle might feel more comfortable.
Otherwise, I think they're almost the same, just depends on personal preference.
Get the one that suits your likings, you'll enjoy either.

The Cold Steel Recon Tanto will put the KA-BAR to shame in all ways, a laughable comparison end of story.

What do you base your opinion on??
I've used KABARs for what seems to be forever. I actually hammered my short USMC fully, into a trunk, using my SP-10 as the hammer.
Crazy, I know. The USMC came back like a champ. No damage whatsoever. You wanna try that with the recon??

I'm a Kabar man myself.:D So I say go for the Kabar it won't let you down none of mine have.

As a hunting knife/general purpose knife, I wouldn't recommend either one.

I feel the tanto-tip is less than ideal for this purpose, as well as a slight PIA to re-sharpen.

Any plain drop or clip-pointed knife in the ~4" blade range from a decent mfr would be a better fit for you IMO.

The CS Tanto is stronger due to having a thick full tang, it's basically one big piece of steel, the K-Bars are full tang, but they are a lot smaller and weaker so they do bend fairly easy.

I know this because I had more than a few K-Bars over the years and used them pretty much the whole time I was in the USMC. ;)

I will add though that I don't really like either knife personally, I like the standard K-Bar better, but it still has the same weakness.

Still, can't hammer it into a tree :D It's got a rubber handle.
Not that it's something anybody would need to do. Just pointing out a funny fact.
Generally, though, I think the Tanto is a blade designed for piercing only. Thus, don't see why anybody would need anything tougher or as tough as these two "contenders". You don't need a really tough knife for SD, and there are better options out there for that specific purpose.

If your gonna get the CS in aus-8.... dont go with the ka-bar but if your going to get the cold steel in sk5 then thats the better of the 2.
