Hello.
I recieved my factory second Cold Steel Recon Tanto today and I am quite pleased. Including shipping, it ran me $57 which I think is a fair deal. The only blemish I can see is where the "COLD STEEL" logo is printed, it isn't impressed deeply into the steel. Obviously, this is no big deal. The knife itself is beautiful, the grind and the finish are even and incredibly smooth. It's sharp as hell out of the box. For me, the grip is really comfortable...it isn't ever going to slip out of my bony hand. In addition, it is weighted quite nicely...hefty enough to feel substantial when it is swung or thrust, but not at all heavy or burdensome.
The only problem I have is a quite evident one, the sheath. I really think we should begin to petition CS about their sheaths. I've heard consistent complaints on the forums here that they're all but useless. This one is some kind of Cordura/cardboard system that doesn't seem like it cost more than 80 cents to design and manufacture.
I am considering buying one of Normark's sheaths, but I don't think I can justify spending $33.00 to hold my $50 knife. Any other recommendations? I have no doubts about the quality of Eric's work, I just don't think I can deal with the price right now. Thanks.

Sheathes are not difficult to make. Do some searches here and on knifeforum.com, where there is a forum of sheathes, or check your library or bookstore. Tandy Leather has ready-made patterns and good advice, or find a shoemaker (if there are any still around). But you may end up paying as much as for one of Normark's superb Concealex sheathes.

Your knife is only $50, but you get a hell of a lot of performance out of it. A great sheath makes a world of difference as well, and I am speaking from experience. A Normark sheath will give you the total package.

The sheath you got from Cold Steel isn't the best because you bought a Second. If you had bought a regular Recon Tanto, you would have gotten a kydex sheath. You can't have it all, unless you fork out the $$.

Crayola, and others...how is the factory CS Kydex sheath? How does it compare to something from Normark?

Hey Neetones...

First off,, Thanks guys for the reccomends...

Factory sheaths are Factory sheaths..
Not to say they are bad.. BladeTech does High Calibre work...

A Custom Sheath is,,well Custom...

If you plan on wearing the knife as per Defensive carry.. The factory sheath won't work...The body is of Concealex,, but the suspension system is webbing...As soon as you add webbing,,you add a strap, snap or buckle of some sorts..

You won't find and straps, snaps or buckles on any of my sheaths.. They don't need it..Matter of fact you won't find webbing on any of my sheaths...

When you draw the knife,,you grab and draw,,nothing to Dink with...

If you have a particular position you want to carry i.e. Kidney,SOB, Cant Forward,Cant Backward, Reverse, Upside Down, Horizontal, Inside/Outside, Left/Right, However you want to carry it,,,I'll set it up that way for you...

You can't do that with a factory sheath.. It's Not intended to do those types of carries...

With a factory sheath at best,,you will get the basics,, Normally Outside of the pant on the Right.

If you are Left Handed,,your Screwed.. If you want to Conceal,,forget it..

OEM sheaths are designed to work for 99% of the people..

My sheaths are Specific purpose and can be personalized pretty much Anyway you want it...

Custom if you will...

Thats the difference..
If on the other hand,,you only want to carry on the right, don't mind webbing and snaps,,then the OEM sheath will work Perfectly for you...

They are pretty frigging decent sheaths,,they do one thing and do it pretty well..

Hope that helped...

The Only Thing I hate on the CS Recon Tanto Kydex sheath I have is that it is non-Adjustable for tension and is really hard to pull the knife out.

Please fix this before I buy a heat gun and fix it myself....

another advantage of a Normark sheath is that it will be much more of a low profile sheath than the factory sheath. The factory sheath was a little big, in my opinion. I had Allen Blade make a sheath for a knife I made, and I couldn't believe how much the knife hugged my body, out of the way yet still there! Custom sheaths are as good as custom knives.

The sheath I talk of is the factory CS Kydex made by ?blade-tech? it looks like.

Really tight around the bottom of the handle and with the grippy rubber of the handle makes it a little hard to release.

Hey West...

Try a little lubrication right at the mouth of the sheath...

The best to use is silicone spray..Shoot a little on your finger and wipe it around in the mouth of the sheath.

If not silicone,,then a little WD40...
That should make things slide a little better...

If that doesn't fix things, then it will need adjusting..

Feel free to drop me a note if you need help or have questions...
