CS Spartan - Rust spots in pocket

I ordered CS Spartan, fetched it from postal office yesterday. I put it in my pocket today for work to see how it rides. It rides well, but after 8 hours and literally none draws from pocket (and inside office) I noticed that the blade had rust spots. Can't believe that. I guess the blade got moist from my sweaty sexy thigs. I'd say, still, it's unacceptable.

So luckily the seller was very understanding and I sent it back for refund. It was really sweet blade otherwise, but I can't imagine myself brushing the rust off the blade after every day of work in FRIGGING OFFICE!

edit: and Im talking about rust in the coated section, not on the edge etc. That doesn't really make sense..

I have heard this exact same story a dozen times now. Never heard of a return over it but it's your knife. Gotta be something to do with the finish, I've never had rust issue with any of the other AUS-8 blades.

oil it man...........not trying to be a wise guy....i have had rust on knives before but not brand new, glad they returned it...:)

Problem with oiling this particular knife is that major portion of the blade is exposed when closed (propably one reason for rusting) and the oil would wipe off easily to pants and have not much effect anyway.

Dunno what to think about that. I have a few Cold Steel knives, and others in AUS-8 steel and pocket carry them regularly. None of them have showed signs of rust. They are all more brushed finish in appearance though, not matte like the Spartan.

I had the same issue with mine when I had it in my pocket on a damp day. I gave it to my brother but I'll be recommending he hit it up with some kind of coating or polish it.

its the bead blast finish that is attracting the rust. mine developed some rust spots just sitting on my desk, but its ok cause i just decided to make it a real hard work user knife.

Get some Tuff-Glide, and spread some on the blade lightly, then let it dry. It is a "dry lubricant" and when dry it provides some protection against this.

Don't know what to think here, I live in a place that has pretty high humidity, and I have never had a problem with any blades getting rust spots. But then it could be because I regularly put a little of the above mentioned stuff on my blades.

I buy the big refill bottle from my local knife shop, and keep the little bottle full, sitting on a shelf right above this here computer. In sight in mind I always say.;)

It's weird really, because Im not at all so overprotective with knives and I don't usually treat them with oil at all. This just bothered me, how it developed the spots by just being in my pocket for eight hours.

I had the same thing happen to my CS Rajah which has the same type of finish. The rust spots were easily rubbed off with some oil and it hasn't rusted since taking better care or it.

It could very well be left over metal filings that oxidized. I would have wiped it off and observed to see if any rust returned.

You mean some sort of metal dust of sort that was on the coating, not in the knife itself?

It seems to have a very "coarse" bead blast finish. I've found that this finish - unless applied to an already highly rust resistant steel - encourages a certain level of surface rust/corrosion.

Luckily, this is easily remedied by taking virtually any metal polish and lightly polishing the blade with it. It does not take much time or effort, and the finish likely won't look to much different.
