Well...I guess the title says most of what I'm asking. A local store has twenty of these in stock for the normal retail price. The snag is that the more I read the forums the more I think a Fallkniven or the like would still be a better deal. I do a lot of hunting and poking around in the mountains and until now thought I was covered. The tang issue with the SRK has me concerned. Any thoughts?

That's a very good deal considering the steel is discontinued and that is a very popular model.

I would buy as many as you can and sell them, if I were in your position. It's a bit greedy, but hey, why pass up on a chance to make some money?

If you want to buy a gold membership and sell them, go for it. I would personally grab one at that price, depending on condition, remove the coating and possibly put a new handle on it. The blade is great from what I have read, but the handles and coating not only look like crap, they don't function well either.

I have a MH in Carbon V which at the time I purchased it was 01. Don't think they are 01 now but still scarf'em up. They are a great design and I for one like the non slip handle on my MH. keepem sharp

Someone posted recently that they bought an SRK in a box that said Carbon V but the blade inside was a new model in AUS-8A. If it really is Carbon V it will say so on the tang.

If nothing else you can sell them for more than your local store is. Pick up a couple one to use, others to sell. They actually are a pretty nice knife to use at their price point.

I have 2 SRK's. I like them. $61 is a relatively good price.

You need to grab those if they are Carbon V. I had nine of those to sell and at a BIN price of $89.99 they went like hotcakes on ebay.

I have one in Carbon V that I reprofiled to convex, and sanded that black krap off of the blade.

It has become my favorite "big knife." I dearly LOVE those kraton grips. They really give you much better control of the knife than any other grip I've ever used. Especially when using the knife in a wet or bloody environment.:D

I too would buy all of 'em and sell most on ebay.
Keep a few as a hedge in case they continue to appreciate it price.

Just be sure that they are Carbon V steel, it's marked on the tang as someone noted above.
And made in the USA. Also check that the (Kraton) handles are in good shape.

I'd do it ASAP. :)

Thanks all. It seems odd that a knife with a steel that can't really be determined, a tang that has been known to break, a coating that rubs off, and a grip that can come apart or cause blisters is so popular, yet I already own two. Also have a Master Hunter and working on a second. The SRK was my knife of choice when in Alaska and deployed in the Middle East. The MH has been on a lot of hunting trips. 'Course then I didn't know what I know now about steels, etc. Makes me wonder if ignorance is bliss. Didn't know I was compromised until I started ready the forums:) I'll pick up a couple more to have in the vehicles. If anyone wants the web addy for the store send me an e-mail. jetwrnch1@spamex.com

To me, that says the "problems" it has are very likely not as bad as some would make them out to be.

I've got two of the older Carbon V SRKs from Cold Steel and I like them both, especially the good carbon steel they are made from. About 15 years ago or more I bead blasted the black finish off the first of my SRKs and it suits me that way. I'm sure, from all I've read about them, the Fallkniven knives are great blades, but I've just never owned one. Among many of us who really liked the Carbon V steel that some of the older Cold Steel blades were made of those SRKs you found priced @ $61 are certainly reasonably priced for good using knives. They only going to go up in value with those who know how good the Carbon V blades are. If you get one or more, just be sure the blades are stamped Carbon V. If they are, it will be very easy to see.

AUGHHH! I called the store just to confirm. 30 minutes and four people later they decided they had the "improved" version with stainless. I wasn't really sure I wanted more of these until they said they didn't have 'em! Now I feel slighted....and the "world's largest knife store" has never heard of Fallkniven! I bet they have Frost Cutlery though. Maybe even a Rachael Ray cooking knife....

Grab them while you can.
Sorry...didn't read your last post....It did kinda sound too good to be true.
