Hi,

would you rather buy a cold steel magnum tanto in san mai III or a Bob Lum tanto in AUS8 ?

Which do you think would be better, and why ?

Thanks

K

Well, I have never had a Bob Lum knife or one of CS's "traditional" tantos, but I will get the ball rolling by saying that I have heard bad things about CS's San Mai in other threads. The search function doesn't seem to want to work foor me, but I will try to edit this post and turn up the threads later.

Hey Guys..

I'll 3rd the Spydie...

I've worked on about a dozen different Spydie Lums,, and they are all beautifully made...

I've also worked on several CS Tanto,,and although they are nice,,especially the 12" magnums,, I'm not a big fan of the guards on them..Didn't mind the Kraton though.... Nicely made knife,,but if given to pick,,it would be the Spydie No Doubt...

Don't forget to consider the point of the of the Tanto. The CS has a sharper point with a thinner edge than the Lum (and Striders, too for that matter).

Both are good at what they have been designed to do. So it depends on what you are using them for.

Hi thanks for the opinions guys.

I went for the Bob Lum as Spyderco are having a sale on them at the moment. It's a really cute knife. Beautifully made + Finished. I am very happy with it.

I think I will get a CS tanto at some time. Still not sure whether to go for san mai III or plain AUS8. I looked back through past threads and It seems to me there was just the one guy who had a San Mai blade which chipped, so it could have just been a lemon. A lot of people seem happy with them. I am also a bit curious as why they use AUS8 for the central layer of the laminate. I think they could have used a better steel like Fallkniven do. Still love the design though!
