In looking at cold steel tomahawks I've noticed the steel listed as 1055 on some websites and 5150 on others.I'd like to know which steel is correct. Also, can anyone tell me what the differences are between the two?I've decided to buy a trailhawk after seeing so many here that have been modified.NICE!I'm also curious as to how it would be for a lightweight pack tool for camp use, shelter building, etc.Being able to make a replacement handle in the bush would be simple compared to a hatchet.I'm thinking it might be pretty handy for hunting as well. What uses have you put yours to?Thanks for any info.

No matter what steel it is (though I think it's 1055), the heat treatment is good, which is more important.
The steel on my Trail Hawk takes a devastating edge that is also durable. I accidentally hit a nail in the wood and the blade suffered only minor denting.

I have a Trail Hawk that has been well used over the years. All I can say is........

COLD STEEL RULES!!!!!!

My only complaint is that they do not have sheaths available for thier tomahawks, except for the Vietnam Hawk.

has anyone ever tried kydex like what survival sheath does for a wood handle hawk?

lots of folks have, brother crossada.

some put a hole in a sheet of kydex (for the handle) and wrap it from the bottom of the head.

some folks just make a little envelope of kydex to cover the bit.

you can line leather sheaths with kydex too, if you want the best of both worlds.

Someone with some leather skills could make some money from us hawk heds.
