CS Trail Hawk Head Attachment/Retention; Kydex 'Hawk Carry Loop

I was reading an earlier thread on 'hawk head attachment methods in order to better secure my Trail Hawk head on its shaft. I made a kydex collar that fits tightly below the head and jams it against the top of the shaft. It's not pretty but it seems functional. Have not field tested it yet but it feels tight and secure.

I originally tried this with Chicago screws but I couldn't get enough tightness. Eyelets and the 1/2 ton arbor press took care of that problem. It's pretty tight and needs persuasion the last couple of inches below the 'hawk head to move into place. It's pretty dry here so I can always tighten the whole works up with a good overnight soaking in a bucket of water if need be.

Malice clips and kydex make for a versatile 'hawk carry loop. A short length of paracord could be used to retain the 'hawk and minimize movement during carry. CS Rifleman's Hawk shown in photo.

I very much like your Trail Hawk sheath+collar. The carry setup also looks pretty cool; what kind of pack/bag/rig/sling (the one with the Rifleman's Hawk) is that?

PS: I wouldn't ever soak handles in water as this is always but a temporary measure. The repeated soaking/drying also tends to wear the handles out, ie cause shrinkage/warpage or it might even crack them.

Thank you Ookami. The bag is an earlier Maxpedition Jumbo S-Type Versipack w/o the hand carry loop. I wouldn't ordinarily carry a Rifleman's Hawk, this was to demonstrate the loop.

It get's so dry here in Nevada that any and all wood left untreated will shrivel and warp to some degree. My splitting maul handle regardless of my best intentions needs serious rehydration after a summer of storage. I have read that some people soak them in linseed oil to achieve the same purpose. In any case, it's not something that needs doing very often.

Nice looking rig, I would think that would hold the head in place. I have thought that 550 wrap below the head might also suffice, but haven't tried it.

btw...where do you get your ''raw'' Kydex from? And how easy is it to work?

Nice work, love the holder. Does the hawk head have a roll pin through it?

Thanks thrillbilly! It's pretty tight. Done right I think 550 paracord would help, and ya can't enough of it in the woods anyways. I get most of my Kydex from BladeKit.com in Georgia. It's pretty easy stuff to work with. There are any number of threads and websites that go it into it in great detail. Give it a try!

Thanks Bud! It looks like a pin but actually it is the set screw in the side of the head.

thanks Conda...that's all I need is another ''hobby' LOL I am gonna check that site out...if I order a pallet of Kydex and set up shop in the apartment...I'm blaming you when the wife gets on me lol
