As the title says, I am debating which one to purchase. I have handled neither so I was hoping for some input.
The Clip point XL 5in Voyager looks like it would be a hell of a cutter...but if I understand correctly the Sog Elite II also 5 in blade is a Assisted opening knife.
Anyone that has both and want to comment I would love the help.

Currently leaning towards the less expensive Voyager....

Thanks

My vote would be neither of the two are worth looking at as much as the Wally World Spyderco Native in S30V ... for $40 you can't even come close to the quality of this knife with either of the two mentioned. I own the Voyager and like it but it simply can't compare in any way with the Native. Take a look at it ... you won't regret it! :D

I'm afraid I have to dissent. If you can set overlook the S30V difference, the Voyagers have a higher fit/finish quality than the S30V Native. I still think it's a great design, just not exceptionally well excecuted. I'll try to get some pictures of what I speak of. By the way, I've carried a Native for several months now.

If opening speed is what you are looking for, I will tell you that I can open my 4, 5, and 6 inch Voyagers lightning fast- as fast as any assisted opener.

Admitedly, I am not the biggest fan of assisted or automatic openers.

I fail to see how the Native would be a good comparison to either knife. The other two have ~5" blades, and the native is a small knife.

Other blades to consider in that size range? If you can find a Cuda Maxx 5.5, it will pretty much blow the other two out of the water. I can't think of many knives with 5" blades offhand.

I can only comment on the CS. I just picked up the plain blade Voyager XL. I like it, feels good in my hand. Nice big fat stout blade for a folder. Sliced up my water bottle real good.:D I'm not keeping it. My freind is going to buy it, I want to get the six incher instead. It will be my EDC. Also was looking at the P Elite myself. Looks good too. Probably can't go wrong with either. Price was a factor for me. The SOG will give you a quicker draw with the assist. But I think with practice you can open both knives the same. You could always buy both, and sell the one you don't want. There are good prices for the CS on Ebay.

I EDC a 5" Voyager, but the tanto blade. It came shaving sharp and has held that edge for a long time with some very minor touch ups on my sharpener.. It is deeply hollow ground thin near the edge and slices through cardboard like butter. I wouldn't do much chopping with it, but it is a great slasher. It can easily be flicked open without too much force and makes a loud thwack when it does. At $50 it has been a great knife for me.

Wow, some nice responses on the Voyager.
Anyone out there own a SOG elite folder and want to compare it against the voyager?
I am curious about the assisted opening....I don't own any but I have handled a few. Some I thought were great, others I felt I could open it manually faster than the spring.
Cuda Maxx......never even touched one before. Is it worth the extra money?

There is an old model, SOG Pentagon Elite 2, and a new model, SOG Spec Elite 2. I own the SOG Pentagon Elite 2. The Elite 2 is a big knife and takes some practice to get it to open quickly. Although I'm not uaually a big fan of "assisted opening" knive, I have a few and this one could be a good candidate for it. The Pentagon has a "dagger" shaped blade and the new Spec a drop point. I also have the Voyager you speak about. Both are good knives for the money and both are AUS-8 blade steel, a good working steel.

Considering SOG's new features for the Spec model (assist open, drop point blade) and the ones it had before (full steel inner liners, Axis style lock, open in back for easy cleaning), I'd go with the SOG. It's a much tougher knife than the Voyager and the assisted opening for a big folder like this would be really nice. You will not be disappointed if you buy the SOG, especially if the knife is going to really be put though its paces. It does cost more but you are getting a lot more knife.

I know of dude that did 2 tours in Iraq with the SOG Pentagon Elite 2. He beat the crap out of it and never had one problem. I though it was a great knife.

I just think I talked myself into buying a new knife. I'll sell the Pentagon on E-bay and....well, you know the rest.

Regards

In my opinion it is, since you get D2 bladesteel and Titanium Handle.
But it depends on how important handle material and steel quality are to you.
It also will cut much better than the SOG.
You can also get it customized for tip up carry, and "wave" it open on the draw.
