CS War hammer mod opinions

OK, due to my surgery, I had to put off sending my CS war hammer head to Vec for a bit. So I decided to put the hickory haft on the head I have and go for a traditional version. Plus it's something I can do while recuperating. Don't worry, they're inexpensive, and I can get another one to Vec when I get back to work.

So then, here I am.
I've sanded the haft, and mounted the head. I'm going to put the langets on. On various spots along the length of the haft, I'm thinking of going with some Celtic knotwork and Elder Futhark runes. Towards the bottom, a good length rawhide wrap.

What I am unsure of, is I was thinking of covering the langets with a rawhide wrap as well. That way, they'd still be there, and provide protection, but would be covered, and give the thing a more "barbarian" look.

I was going to do the wraps last, after soaking the head area in BLO, and applying several coats of BLO to the haft. Then soak the rawhide, wrap the handle, and let the rawhide tighten itself.

Comments?

Just starting on it, no pics yet.

At this point, it looks like:

:p

Looking for opinions on ym plans.

So far, tracing the knot work is a real bitch.
I might do a paracord wrap rather than rawhide.

looks good, what is BLO?

the axe head looks a little funny; but that might just be the photography
Overall looks great post pics once the rawhides on

Well, I started the knotwork, got along pretty well, and then made a MASSIVE error. Really screwed it up.

So I did what any craftsman would do: I covered it up.

Did a striped woodburn pattern. . .<sigh>

I'm afraid I have the artistic talent of an autistic muskrat.

haha, well done. i just bought a warhammer the other day. i stripped the paint off with a brass wire wheel and im going to give the head, langets, and a hawk head a good soak in some vinegar tomorrow to force a patina. definitely thinking some runes but i dont know what yet. just the idea i had though.

They beg for runes, don't they?

I'll probably have Vec do some of that to the one I send him -- hope he's a better artist than I am.

Awesome Idea. Always thought of modding one myself. Almost ordered one in 2003 in Iraq and was planning on cutting the handle down. Was to be used as a Hajee car smasher, but never go around to it. :)

they sure do. i burned "eitri" in runes on mine today. he was one of the dwarves that forged thor's hammer mjolnir. it seems as though these heads dont take a patina very well. how would you go about forcing one? i stripped the paint off with a wire wheel which left a pretty good looking matte grey finish but id like to patina it if possible.

You might have some of whatever they primed it with before painting it inhibiting a patina.

ou could try something like Naval Jelly, it does remove rust, but if you leave it on a long time, it will start to patina the metal itself (it's an acid-based solution). Or maybe just dunk the head for a while in some serious paint stripper, and then try a mustard or citrus patina.

I don't know, I'm just leaving the black paint on mine for now.

ill probably try the paint stripper soak first since i have some on hand already. i hadnt thought about the primer. thanks.

I really really really like my CS war hammer.

Some of Cold Steel's stuff is cool. Some of it is silly.

This thing is downright vicious.

I removed most of the black coating on the head using a vibrating palm sander. I completely removed the coating on the langets using the same. Then I patinated the steel with vinegar/H2O2/salt. The head now looks like an antique piece of cast iron. I sanded the handle and restained it with Minwax walnut stain.

Mine's gonna get the runes and artwork too. I still haven't decided on anything yet.
