OK, due to my surgery, I had to put off sending my CS war hammer head to Vec for a bit. So I decided to put the hickory haft on the head I have and go for a traditional version. Plus it's something I can do while recuperating. Don't worry, they're inexpensive, and I can get another one to Vec when I get back to work.
So then, here I am.
I've sanded the haft, and mounted the head. I'm going to put the langets on. On various spots along the length of the haft, I'm thinking of going with some Celtic knotwork and Elder Futhark runes. Towards the bottom, a good length rawhide wrap.
What I am unsure of, is I was thinking of covering the langets with a rawhide wrap as well. That way, they'd still be there, and provide protection, but would be covered, and give the thing a more "barbarian" look.
I was going to do the wraps last, after soaking the head area in BLO, and applying several coats of BLO to the haft. Then soak the rawhide, wrap the handle, and let the rawhide tighten itself.
Comments?
