Came across this Russian test video of the XHP Recon 1. I was surprised at how well the DLC coating held up after cutting both ends of a can. I thought this coating would be weaker than the typical DLC from other manufacturer, since it looks like the coating is being applied on a smooth surface. I wonder what kind of process is involved..

No translation needed - the visual speaks for itself.

Yeah i was surprised. The yokote part of the blade as well as the ridge usually get scratched up the most when doing this kind of pierce cut, yet i can see any scratch... Did the same thing with my kershaw blur DLC on a coke can, which is much thinner, and i got scratches along the blade ridges.

That guy obviously is no former boy scout or camper. He does not know how to open a can with a knife. I thought he was going to stab himself a couple of times.

I am waiting, waiting, (tap, tap, tap...) for the American Lawman with this steel. :grumpy:

I would have liked them to do a tanto without the serrations but I understand why they went the way they did.

The Recon 1 is almost an exemplar model of Cold Steel. You have the pure G10 construction, the tri-ad lock, the Americanized tanto blade, and Cold Steel's own serration pattern, all in one knife. At 4" it's also legal pretty much anywhere you can carry a knife. About all it lacks is the thumb plate wave opener.

Oh yeah, looks nice.
I will post a nice picture review when my AK XHP arrives for sure.
Thanks for sharing the video.

I think is something like Black Pearl coating from Benchmade. It has almost the same color :) I have H-D LFK knife with this type of coating and I even tried to scratch it with kitchen knife - no problems at all.

I don't think it's like Benchmade BP1 coating though, as according to BM it's TiCN applied via PVD. Did a little bit of research, CS's DLC coating maybe the "real" DLC coating as opposed to the "tungsten-DLC", a.k.a. WCC used by ZT and Spyderco, hence they look different. Also, CS's DLC coating looks lighter in color probably due to the coating being thinner that typical WCC. However both are being applied through CVD or PVD process.

Technical reference for anyone interested:

Benchmade's BP1 coating:
BP1 COATING: Black Pearl (BP) is a PVD (physical vapor deposition) coating made up of Titanium Carbo-Nitride (TiCN for short). It is a darker, near black, scratch resistant coating with nice decorative qualities.

Here are a few pictures of the new coating and steel.
It is really gorgeous, not flat but a nice sheen to it. Very nice, and you can just faintly see the perfect grind lines behind the coating.
You can see from the pictures how the coating acts to oil and finger prints. It creates a bit of a rainbow look against the blade. Very cooooool.

Wow very nice looking, thanks for sharing! I believe this is the 2nd ever picture of XHP AK i've ever seen, other than the one Mike Sastre posted couple months ago. Now, if only they got XHP American Lawman... Am I the only one who's more excited about the new DLC than the XHP steel?
