I have ordered a Magnum Tanto ii in the vg10 san mai.
What has been others experience with chipping in this steel?
I have a chefs knife which uses it and it microchips easily, however, it is not a CS product and probably does not have the same heat treat.
I would just like to hear other folks experience with this steel from Cold Steel.

Doesn't answer the question.
I know that the knives are very tough.
Just wondering about micro chipping of the edge in use.
Mainly due to my experience of that problem with vg 10 from kershaw/shun and falkniven.

Yes, VG-10 and VG-1 can micro-chip, especially with an acute edge angle (SM Recon Scout and Trailmaster). Of course, it depends on what your using the knife for. Personally, id take 3V over VG-10 SM III any day of the week.

I have the magnum tanto ii in 3 v.
I absolutely love it!
It is my first 3v blade. I cut 40 pounds of top round with it last week, 13# of it was for jerky so cut very thin. Even after all that it was still very sharp.
Just got a very good deal on the san mai blade.
I still think Cold Steel does something different with their heat treat. A Fallkniven would be chip city after what CS put that 12 inch Tanto through in the video.

I have had microchips on the edge with Cold Steel San Mai III VG1 and Falkniven VG10. In fact I've also encountered it with FK's 3G, which is SG2 core. In all cases after an initial sharpening never occurred again. So I wouldn't be surprised if CS VG10 San Mai showed the same. No idea how 3V would behave.

3v behaves exceptionally well!
I have seen video of, and heard many other reports of FK's vg10 san mai chipping horribly! I had one of their f1 knives but didn't kepp it long enough to have any problems with it.
I think Cold Steels version will perform better, at least from what I've seen.
My 3v magnum tanto is a winner in every way!
