CTD Rough Use Knife. Wow

look at the knife tests destruction tests on youtube or whatever. That is incredible for $10. CHeaper than Dirt Rough Use knife.

I remember laughting when i first saw that on CTD site. I'm like, yeah right, a 3/16" china stainless knife, that's gonna take some rough use.

They make a spear point flat ground too that probably isn't as tough as the bowie style, but if it is anywhere as close this pretty much makes the rubber hilted cold steel OSI way overpriced.

Badly heattreated 440A can be pretty tough. "Toughness" is usually inversely proportional to edge holding (when talking about the same steel), since edge holding is increased by higher hardness, which makes it more brittle and thus less tough. Heck, 440A is pretty tough even when heat treated well.

Also, stop watching noss4's "test" videos. They're bad for the brain.
 
I just let 'em run in another window while I surf other stuff and click over if I hear something interesting.

That knife held its edge after lots of wood chopping. Edge did blunt when it chopped bricks.

Tip never broke, butt broke eventually from hammering the tip into concrete bricks, he jumped on it and it held up. He was able to bend it out of true in the vise w/o a cheater bar, but w/ strain, and he broke the handle/tang off in the vise w/ an 8lb sledge, Eventually. Took over an hr.
 
I got one out of curiousity, a while back.

Came dull, didnt sharpen worth a damn, didnt hold an edge for crap.

Handle broke after doing almost nothing, as the tang is 2 piece and held together in the crappy plastic handle by the same means as a jigsaw puzzle.


"Knifetests" is worthless. (But not just because of the CTD knife test)

I had one.

After a lot of work the Bolo style became useable sharp but yea the steel was quite soft. It did however hack and chop well enough so I gave it to my buddy.

With knives you usually get what you pay for and there is no free lunch.

Look at how well an Old Hickory butcher knife performed in his tests. It's a few dollars cheaper and will actually take (and hold) a decent edge! Its even made in the USA. Doesn't come with a sheath though.

I have a bar of 1/8" by 1.5" mild welding steel I bought at Tractor Supply that can take a pretty good pounding too, but that doesn't mean it's very good for cutting stuff. Like Ankerson said, you usually get what you pay for when it comes to knives. Old Hickory, Opinel and Mora seem to be a bit of an exception to that rule...but it's still a pretty good rule.
 
i bought two of them after seeing noss's destruction video. i used them for a couple of camping trips/quading etc and they worked decently well but after a little bit of batonning the handle formed a significant rattle. not to mention it doesnt take a very good edge nor hold the one you get on it. but for 10 bucks its better than most 10 dollar knives you find when you concider the durability. (i wouldnt even concider batonning most 10 dollar knives)
 
I second the Ole' Hicks. They're pretty darn hard to beat for the money. Given you can supply a sheath. Full tang, 1095, nice useable blade profile that's not overly thick. All in all, IMHO an Old Hickory Butcher knife offers a great deal in regards to the price.
