Does anyone know much about the cts bd1 steel in the spyderco manix 2 lightweight? Would I be better off getting the other manix 2 with 154 cm steel? I would be edc ing these blades if I got one.

Thanks

CTS -BD1 is probably the "worst" of the steels offered on the manix 2's but that doesn't mean its a bad steel. Its plenty capable of holding an edge and it's also one of the most stain resistant steels available. Its also very easy to sharpen and takes an extremely fine edge. It won't hold that edge as long as S30V or even 154CM but in a $70 knife its fine.

I agree with C_k, but will also mention that the steel is easy to keep an edge on even though it doesn't last as long as S30V.

My Manix 2 LW is a great knife and the CTS-BD1 doesn't make me carry/use it any less. It is definitely not a bad steel. That said, Sal Glesser of Spyderco mentioned that they are coming out with a Manix 2 LW with S110V. That should be a completely awesome knife. :)

I'd just get the regular Manix. I got the LW and wasn't impressed by it. From what I've heard from others, the regular Manix has better F&F than the LW.

I have the Manix 2 LW and I really like the CTS-BD1 steel. It takes a very fine edge and is easy to sharpen. It has performed quite well for me.

It's very stainless, easy to sharpen, will hold an edge for a respectable amount of time based on the alloy content so there are no surprises there, low carbide content.

It's used in lower end knives to help keep the cost down as it's an inexpensive steel.

Nothing wrong with it, just don't expect too much from it and you will be fine.

Would be better suited for kitchen knives due to ease of sharpening and stain resistance.

I could go for some kitchen knives in this steel.I remember a discussion some time ago regarding kitchen knives in this steel.

The steel sharpens up in no time, and takes a killer edge, but doesn't hold an edge for crap. It is really overpriced for the performance in a $70 knife. It fits better with the $30-40 UKPK. I would rate it below VG-10 and 440C, both of which usually hold an edge a little worse than 154cm.

For the Manix LW, I wish Spyderco took the 154cm that was pushed off then regular model and put it onto the LW model. From what I have seen BD1 performs about the same as AUS-8, and $70 for a knife in AUS-8 is not good.

It polishes pretty well from my experience. I'm not sure about edge retention, because I don't usually carry my Manix 2 Lightweight.
