I need a piece of this stuff..not very much. I have a client wanting a blade made of this for a folder.

I need a piece about 1 7/8" wide..but could make do with 1 3/4" wide.

It needs to be about 4 1/4" long or possibly 4.5"

If I could get double the ammount that would be great. Like a piece the same width as above but about 9 or 10" long would be fine.

Thickness is critical..I need at least 1/8" finished thickness. I've heard this stuff is famous for having scale, so if a piece is available that has scale, as long as it will clean up to 1/8" that will work. 1/8" precision ground will work fine too.

I can't seem to find this stuff anywhere. Thanks for the help.

I'll check with Carpenter. AKS does not stock it anymore. I tried to get some at blade, and she told me they are not carrying it anymore due to quality issues.

Butch Harner says that the QC is much better now. He apparently loves the stuff for kitchen knives. Cut Brooklyn had also switched over from CPM 154 to CTS-XHP last time that I heard. The complaint that I heard from Chuck at Alpha was that on one sheet, it was not exactly straight and he had to have .250 steel "cleaned up" down to the .195 range before it was usable. I remember someone else saying that on some stock, it appeared that they rolled a piece of the canister used during the PM process into the sheet. According to a certain mustachioed Italian gentleman they we all know, another problem with the new Carpenter products is that so far, the only way for us little guys to get it is to go through the service center in Texas that used to be Crucible. Apparently Carpenter isn't selling to any other distributors at this time. I may be a bit fuzzy on the numbers, but I asked about some a while back and IIRC, it was considerably more than what i would pay today for CPM 3V. I know the stainless super steels cost more, but this was quite a difference. I seem to remember that a 12 x 72 sheet of .103 CTS-XHP cost about as much as a 24 x 36 .172 sheet of 3V, Add to that the fact that Carpenter was saying that it would clean up to .93 and the Crucible stuff is actually a tad oversized so it cleans up to a true .172 in my limited experience, you can see what I mean.

I talked to S B Specialty metals yesterday. When I called carpenter, this is where they sent me. I talked to a lady on the phone, and she said the shortest length you can get is 36". They can do any width or thickness I guess (within reason) and she said they would cut whatever you need.

I told her 1/8" thick, 1" wide. She said $41 for the stick. I asked about 1 3/8" wide, and she said $57. UPS shipping to me in AL would be $16.

Doesn't sound like a bad price if you ask me. I'm still thinking about getting some. Thing is, I just don't need that much. I will never use it all.

Another thing I'm unsure of is if the 1/8" thickness is scale and all. I need it to clean up to 1/8", so I need to call back and clarify whether or not it is finish ground or mill finish.

Just talked with them again. The prices she quoted me are for hot rolled finish, not surface ground.

What I need is 1 7/8 wide, so she recommended going with the next size up in hot rolled that they had which was .165-.183". This way it can be surface ground down to near 1/8".

For the 36" piece it is $82. UPS on top of that.

Does this sound reasonable?

FWIW, I haven't bought much blade steel. I usually get my stuff from AKS, and it is like 12" lengths. Even then I don't use it all. I am not familiar with what is a good price or not.

They seem to have the prices more in line with their competitors now. A 2 inch wide by 36 long piece of CPM S35VN at .156 which "cleans up" to .140 is $75 from our unnamed friend.
