I really like my Kershaw Bump, what an all around useful knife, I carry it almost everywhere. I also own a Cuda Maxx 5.5 Stiletto, I don't carry this knife, why? To me it is an all out weapon. But I love it for my collection, the D2 steel is very nice and I love the shape.

Now for my rant:

The Bump is a solid lockup. It comes out easy and has no blade play in any direction. The Cuda Maxx on the other hand comes out easy, I love the ways you can open this knife and fast, the lock up is good enough but it is better if you squeeze the frame lock in. But this wears down the frame lock where it hits the tang, not good.

Looking at the Bump and looking at the Cuda I feel that the frame lock on the Cuda should have had the spring of the frame arm pushed down more so that it would lock up solid right off. And look at the Bump, it has a fine angle on its tang lock up that wedges it up tight. The Cuda would lock up better with a design like that. I would even pay more for a better design, but don't get me wrong, I am keeping the Cuda I have. If they did improve it, I would just have to buy another one.

Just my thoughts!

Welcome to Bladeforums!

I have a custom Madd Maxx stiletto. I also have two CUDA Maxx bowies. No problem with the lock in any of them. There may be some individual variation in yours. Only the Sebenza is the same from knife to knife :D

Thanks! (Oh, my aching fingertips!)

My theme song :)

You talk too much you worry me to death,
You talk too much, you even worry my pet
You just talk, talk too much
You talk about people that you don't know,
You talk about people wherever you go
You just talk, talk too much
You talk about people that you've never seen,
You talk about people, you can make me scream
You just talk, you talk too much

hey, another San Diegan! howdy!

i also owned the CUDA Maxx, bowie style, and the lock-up was perfect, almost too strong!! if you have any concerns over the locking mechanism, you should give Camillus a call.

and you're right about the stiletto blade: i wanted the Maxx for SD, as well as a big-daddy EDC, and i avoided the stiletto design so as not to raise too much concern when wielding it in public. that thing's a shocker!

The Maxx Stiletto is all kinds of cool, but I prefer the Maxx Bowie for every practical purpose. I own both, I just never found the Stiletto nearly as useful.

Hi, yes San Diego is great.

I will be getting the Camillus Aftermath soon, it's in the mail now, should be here by Friday, the Bowie design is just so much more useful. I went with Camillus partly because of their reputation for excellent service, but because the Maxx Stiletto is just for my collection and not for use I am just fine with how it locks up. The Aftermath on the other hand I will carry sometimes, and if I have any trouble with the lock up I will work with Camillus to fix it.

You are actually seeing the Ti being worn from the lock? Or is it that the lock is seating in? That is one issue I have had with the Camillus locks, they aren't seated in before shipped. If you are actually seeing the lock wear that fast. Send the knife back. There is a problem with it. The lock on the Cuda Maxx was designed by Darrel Ralph. That lock was thoroughly tested and abused and didn't fail. I got to see the test knife.

One other thing to check on that I have seen was a pivot that was too loose. It allowed lateral play in the blade and made it appear that the lock was wearing quickly. Tightened up, that lock went back to it's original spot.

Great advice Dirk. If there is one thing the Dirkman knows it's MAXX'S!! :D  :)

Thanks for the advice, I tighten all my knives and oil them. I was flicking the Maxx Stiletto very hard, harder then I should have. I also used my thumb to push in the lock. Yes this did cause wear on the lock and it now sits in all the way. This actually is more strong this way. so now if I open it I just push in the lock with the thumb is works good. I got my Camillus Aftermath today and this knife is a lot more quality then the Maxx Stiletto. The Aftermath is finished off better and the frame lock is solid, I can not push it in anymore, there is no blade play. I had to tighten it up and oil it before it was solid, but that is normal for a new knife. I did not expect such a solid lock up on a big knife like the Aftermath. You can count on one thing from me, I will be buying more Camillus knives, I am very impressed by their customer support and the types of knives they make. The quality is top notch and I understand that a bigger knife is harder to lock up solid. Darrel Ralph has a fan in me.
