Culling old belts.

I see few grains of abrasive left, those would last couple of more years in my shop! Seriously though, I should do the same.

I Hate doing it.....one of the Worst parts of knifemaking, idk what to do with them?

"Use belts like they're free".

Yes that was advice from a guy who sold belts. But in the end, he was right, for me at least. It's a lot easier for me to get knives done in a timely manner without grinding being a pain in my neck when I follow this advice.

I laughed when I first heard some maker's spend more on belts than steel....can certainly be true in cases!

I scrap them freely now....before I'm even tempted to make myself unhappy with it again. If someone comes up with a good use, I'm all ears. Maybe an off-the-grid building material!

I'm a child of the 70's....my mother grew up poor, and scrounged and saved Everything! I remember her reappolstering the folding lawn furniture chairs.

Seems like people don't use those kind of chairs now..?

Well, the strapping is about 2" wide.
I keep wondering if I'm not begin resourceful enough, and use Them.

Interesting project idea. But it sounds like it would cost more in terms of time and effort that it would in money to make such a chair with grinding belts.

David........C'mon, where are we?
..... It's cheaper to Buy knives, than it is to Make them.
Haha.....so I don't think That argument holds true

Crag the Brewer Crag the Brewer how much do you need to get paid per hour to make knives? Now how much money in wood and resources plus how many hours would it take you to make a serviceable lawn chair from start to finish? I'd have to do it in about an hour for it to be worth my time to build one out of belts rather than buy a cheap one somewhere.

No it's not. Unless you mean gas station knives. 🤨

I might not ever break even....😵 haha

I'm a do more with less knife maker. I make the best knives I can with limited resources. I have always done more with less because I have never had money. I never had high paying jobs. I have learned how to do the best I can with what I have, but that includes the time I have. This is why belts are one thing I don't mind spending the money on, because it more than makes up for it in savings of time.

That makes sense, Logically.....but I'm not There yet.

I cut mine when I throw them away so I can’t dig them out of the trash and use them again. I do like to use worn belts (generally 320 or 400 grit) for things like crowning spines and finishing plunge lines. In my hands a slow running, half worn belt makes it easier to make very deliberate movements but is still plenty forgiving if my hand slips or something.

I think we're talking about re-belting one of those aluminum frame lawn chairs, so no frame building involved. The sanding belts are free since they're worn out heading to the garbage. Cut the junked belts, sew (everybody does have and use a sewing machine?) them end to end to make one long strip for lacing up the aluminum frame. Is it doable? Yes. Am I planning to do it - NO!!!

I'm thinking id make more money working fast food, probably?

I make all sorts of things that are a total waste of time. Just because I want to, where just buying some sort of imported item would be more economical....

* For the record, I doubt if ever would make that chair, but it gets me thinking.

But
A couple years ago I made my fil a turned Stainless measuring cup for his mixed drinks. I had to figure out volume for what he likes. It was a fun project, with multiple parts. I made it with low tech, and spent Way too many hours for what I could of bought for a dollar.

So, yes.....I am known for being a waste of time.
And I'm very slow making knives.
