cummins diesel engine wrist pins

i have some wrist pins from a cummins motor and i was wondering what kind of steel they might be made from.

I'm with Sam, A quick Google search turned up 4130 / 9310 / 12CrNi3A / H13 I have a access to a mess of them myself, but never tried them since I couldnt ever figure out what they were made from.

You're either the baddest hammer swinger on the planet or have a power hammer.... ain't no in between on something that size. :D
 
back in the late 90's i was over at a friends place and his wife was into forging knives. we fired up her forge and we heated one of these up and tried to pound it somewhat flat :rolleyes:.

after about a half hour we gave up and the only thing we did was make it somewhat oval on one end. they would work great for a press pin or paperweight i guess.
 
Do you guys know if valves from gasoline (car/truck) motors are usually good steel?

The pawn shops and jewelry supplies stores here sell stamps for silversmithing that appear to be made of valves with the flared part cut off. When I get bored I'm going to try to filework some stamps myself. I have a collection of old handmade ones I pick up on the reservation fron time to time, I think they are really cool.
