Cunning pilot foils armed hijacker !

I read this the other day and couldn't believe how clever and brave this pilot and the passengers were.

Situation: African hijacker somehow boards plane in Mauritania with two pistols (Security? Hmmmm....). Plane is traveling nationally to another city.

In mid-air he demands the crew and pilot of the Boeing 737 to change course and fly to France.

Captain informs him he doesn't have enough fuel to go to France and he must make a landing in the Canary Islands instead.

Captain ascertains his assailant doesn't speak French (the predominant language on board) and carefully warns the passengers in French to BE READY and that he is going to take him out on the landing, as he will be the only person without a seatbelt.

As the plane lands he slams on the brakes and then accellerates hard, toppling the hijacker to the ground.

The ready passengers and crew jump up and throw a large pot of scalding water on him and disarm him in the melee. It works!

What a quick-thinking plan and reaction to a potential disaster.

The pilot deserves a medal!
