Jerry, at those prices, I think you are just break'n even on the cost of grinder belts!!!! That is some serious metal removal!

they grind them before HT not after. can't be that hard when they are dead soft:rolleyes:

I don't know about that, maybe the original profile and initial rough flat grind, but all of the scallops, swedges and final grinds are probably after heat treat. You think they just heat treated those SHBMs, SHSHs and those Ergo blanks the variants are made from? There are alot of custom makes out there that grind the roughed out blanks after heat treat.

PUULEEEZZZ...I cannot imagine doing major grinding after HT, unless they are doing it in a cryo room (and no human could live in that) to keep temps from skyrocketing, thereby, ruining the HT. Can you?

It's easier to have the CNC do it's program curves, scallops and swedges and only finish grinding is probably done after HT.

not to mention the extra time it takes to had grind all that on massive production like this is.

I think Tim is correct. I know of several custom makers who only rough out the shape prior to heat treat and then perform the finishing grinds afterwards.

custom makers don't have production line issues, concerning CNC machines, mills, lathes, and continuous production line that cannot be stopped, well do they:D

So, you think Jerry had an CNC operator individually program #77, #78, #80 and #81 (not to mention some from the other pages)? I'm not saying the production knives aren't CNC'd, just these customs. I bet they only made one or two of each one of those. You have to remember, with a variable speed grinder and 50 to 60 grit belts, they can remove a lot of material without generating much heat, it is not like a grinding wheel that is spinning at 1800RPMS. Send me one of your SHBMs, I'll make it into a SHSH without bothering the heat treat!

.
You must be drink'n your cheap Scotch and beer mixture again!!!! :foot:

no, I'm just being realistic. It is much easier to program machines these days than to sit at a grinder making scallops and swedges. But maybe you are correct who knows. neither one of us really does, now do we. these are not so limited.

Custom fighter, I know, but is this something like the size/handle configuration of the full sized Sus Scrofa?
