Louis, if the sword is antique and you want to keep it antique, don't do anything with it. If the sacratches aren't too deep, try rottenstone or pumice (check a woodworking store)to take the scratches out. If you can't find those, try an automotive finish store, they should have a polishing compound that would take out swirls. They'll also have snadpaper up to 2000 to give a mirror finish (depending on what kind of finish the sword has in the first place). Of course,the other option is to sand the whole thing to give it a satin finish (use a lubricant, and start with a higher grit and work your way down untill you start to remove the scratches and then work back up, steel wool works well for satin).
