I have a nice old Puma Game Warden that I picked up at the last gun show at a good price, but the tip of the blade is just precisely even with the rear bolsters. How can I adjust things to make the blade sit just a skosh deeper in the handle when closed?

That can usually be fixed by filing the 'kick' a tiny bit. The kick is the small downward projection of steel just aft of the cutting edge, at the bottom of the forward end of the tang (ricasso). The kick is what ordinarily rests against the inside of the lock bar (or backspring, on a slipjoint), and which determines how low in the handle the blade sits, when closed.

Filing a tiny bit of steel off the kick can make all the difference. Take it slowly and don't overdo it; a tiny bit of filing usually goes a long way, in lowering the tip of the blade. Also need to pay very close attention to how close the cutting edge is to the inside of the lock bar when closed, before you do any filing. Too much filed off the kick, and the cutting edge might start touching or impacting the inside of the lock bar when closing the blade.

On older, very worn knives that might've already had the kick filed, and/or they've been sharpened so much that the tip of the blade has retreated in length, it may be necessary to grind down the tip from the spine side, to effectively conceal the tip within the handle. But if your knife isn't that worn, you shouldn't need to do that.
