Curious: How does HI heat treat their double edged swords?
If anyone knows, I'm curious to find out. Are they differentially tempered? If so, how do they do it?, if not?..... Then how? Thanks.

Good question! Dave Rishar would know I'll bet. I think he etched his carved horn handled Manjushri quite a while back, but I can't remember the results.

Regards,

Norm

All of my double edgers are through hardened. It makes sense; differential hardening would be extremely difficult on two edges and a good spring temper throughout is by no means a bad heat treat for a sword.

The Napoleons seem to be hardened throughout as well. Not making excuses, but I'd rather have a spring temper throughout than a differential hardening on a sword optimized for thrusting. I've come to trust the kamis on their way of doing things.

I had my doubts about edgeholding against hard targets until my Manjushree went up against Hollowdweller's scrap wood. My fears have been put to rest. If anything, they're a bit harder than spring temper. It would be interesting to do an actual hardness test.

The file tells me 50-55 Rc on the Manjushree and Dukti, with the Manjushree being a point or two harder than the Dukti. Take that with a grain of salt.

Thanks, Dave, from what I understand that's about perfect for a sword such as those.
P.S. What's up with your head in your avatar? Part of me wants to see your avatar enlarged. The part is very scared.

I've got a swollen lymph node. My God, is it noticeable?

It's some kind of demon mask from the PI. After staining and a good oil soak it turned out rather nice.

The more that I think about it, the more I realize that I had multiple meanings hidden in my avatar. Most of them are no longer applicable. I'll be changing it soon.

Thanks for the always informative and colorful answer, Dave.

I'd wondered about that too, even though I don't own a sword.

AGREED!!!!!

I always wondered what you were wearing in it though, it almost looked like a shoe :D

Now that I've seen a bigger pic, it's a really cool mask, good pic all around :)
