hey guys/gals,

this is probably a stupid question, because I've owned about 10 from years gone by.... how bad do Moras rust??

I ask this because i'd like to throw a nice, but cheap, knife into my kayak in case i need a fixed blade for any reason. the ones i had never rust but I'm not sure if that's from proper maintenance or the steel, i was just recently told they rust worst then 1095.

anyone could enlighten me id be helpful. If you have another knife in mind instead of the Mora let feel free o know

For use around water I'd go with a stainless model. I left one of my carbon Moras wrapped in vinegar-soaked paper towel too long while doing a forced patina, and it developed some small rust spots. They rubbed right off when I applied some mineral oil, but still. I think Mora is using 12C27M in their inox models, which is fairly decent corrosion wise. If you really want carbon, I'd say do a mirror polish on it and apply a generous coating of your oil of choice before stashing it away in its sheath. Also use a model that comes with a plastic sheath, not leather or Unica.

Check out a Mora Bushcraft/Force 11835 or FT11832. There are more models in different colors but these will show you the two blades styles available.
I prefer the FT11832 with the scalloped blade. They use Sandvic 12C27 stainless that I have very good luck with both edge retention and corrosion.
They cost a little more than the Clippers etc. but the handles are more comfortable and the blades are a bit larger all the way around.

thanks for the quick replies, i was looking at the Mora Scout knife

Aren't those availible also in stainless?

I have had bad experience with carbonsteel Mora's, when I have forgotten them in the boat.
The regular carbonsteels are basically the same as 1095 and they rust if neglected.
Mora 12c27 works way better and I can leave one of them in the boat during the summer season.

Mikael

Edit: Ok I checked and the stainless with double guard is the birchhandled Scout model.
I guess the Mora Companion in stainless is the best choice for kayaking, but the new Bushcraft Orange looks interesting.

It looks good to me. I believe it says stainless on the blade.
This knife is going to cut like crazy and the sheath looks secure.

I'm pretty sure that says stainless steel on the blade.

The Mora Companion comes in Stainless as well as Bushcraft Forest, Signal and Mora 2000 but no finger guard.

Yes they are stainless, but now discontinued and replaced with the birchhandle version.

It is 12C27, a stainless steel, as I posted at 1:31 PM -- apparently in invisible print.

Many sellers have them in stock for sale in black, yellow, and orange.

The "Classic" model of the Scout with a wood handle is also in 12C27 - a stainless steel. It's for sale too.

I really dig the 2000, also the 2000 snaps into the sheath, might not impact your choice too much but still nice to know.

I gave a friend the same knife you have pictured. He uses it at home, fishing, ice fishing, camping. Leaves it in the sink - you get the picture. He has had it for a couple of years and it hasn't shown any rust. But only used in/around fresh water. Put it in a dry bag and you shouldn't have any problem. Take a silicon or mineral oil cloth with you in case you need to use it - but I don't think that is absolutely necessary.

good to know! just ordered the yellow one. Mainly so i can see it if i put it down & its the exact same color of yellow as the top of my kayak haha

compared them when i had the kayak in the bed of the truck, local guy was asking $30 for it, $12 online & will be here by Wednesday!

never paid more that $20 for a mora, don't plan to either haha
