or is this a new thing.........that stated and i am paraphrasing.....no chopping, batoning, hard use at all or it will fail. along with a message of..... it's a folder not a fixed blade so use it to cut butter only?

just got a bd1 version and i was shocked at the red tag wrapped around it warning if i didn't only use it to cut butter and basic cutting tasks it would fail and i'd be sorry....more paraphrasing.

i was surprised.......

now i don't go and beat knives beyond knife use tasks, but i've never seen this on any of my bigger cold steels........

I say be mindful of the tip, as Cold Steel wanted it to be a capable stabber. The thickness of the stock, pivot, and Triad pin, makes that thing as beastly a folder as ever made. But, without that tag, you will see people treating it like a Busse Battle Mistress.

The Rajah folders and the Espada folders have always had that label
The new Colossus has the same thing
It says:

WARNING: This knife is extremely sharp. We have tried to make this knife as strong, tough and safe as possible. Please keep in mind that despite it's size and weight, it is a folding knife, NOT a fixed blade, and was designed for cutting and very light chopping duties. Do not use it as an axe, hatchet, cleaver, machete, screwdriver, prybar or sword.
Please do not use this folding knife as if it was a fixed blade knife that doesn't fold.
Only use it for tasks appropriate for a folding knife and we're sure it will give you many years of long faithful service.

These are specialized cutting tools, and their design nuances should be considered when used.
It certainly doesn't say "no_hard use at all or it will fail"

I hope that helps
Thanks

I'll be honest, I happily use mine as a folding machete/hatchet with no issues. I pretty much interpreted the warning as Cold Steel's polite way of saying, "go ahead, but if you lose a finger don't blame us."

guess you missed where i said, "i am paraphrasing." in fairness my bad sense of humor probably came across as insulting and demeaning now that i re-read it, so i apologize. it was out of line, but the question was serious.

course....."and was designed for cutting and very light chopping duties." that to me implies no hard use. so be it. i'm not here to argue just was surprised to see it on the rajah II.

I hope that helps

yes Sir it does, thank you for the response.

so this leads me to a different question..... the rajah II is what a half inch longer than the xl talwar and xl voyager i have and they had no label like that. is it because that extra .5" makes all the difference between someone overusing a folding knife or not, or legal reasons or......? thank you in advance.

Different blade shapes and grinds serve different purposes. Some of them are good all-round knives that can serve a bunch of roles, others are very specialized tools. The Espada for example is an awesome SD tool, but a terrible wood chopper :)

I dunno about that. I have used a medium Espada to take bark off of sticks, shape the wood, and chop down all the branches and knots. Maybe I didn't actually cut down a tree, but it chopped out some pretty hard knots without trouble.

JB, I have the xl voyager and the rajah and I think the Rajah has the warning while the Voyager doesn't is related to the Rajah being enough heavier to tempt some people to abuse the knife

^fair point. i was just surprised as cold steel marketing is so heavy on using on the harder side. the way i read it i took it as don';t use it on the harder side, but in fairness my interpretation was off obviously.

The large Espada has nasty detent, and could easily chop off a finger tip, (finger?) if you are not extremely careful opening/closing the blade. I just play it safe and, open with two hands. A small price to pay for maybe the "coolest" production knife ever made.

Had to learn that the hard way...

Using it as a folding branch chopper. Half-folded it while wearing gardening gloves, but forgot to put my finger away and the detent closed the blade.

So yeah, I find it nice that they put the label/warning on it.

The strong closing force on a Triad Lock are one of the reasons I prefer them over other locking or detent designs.

They are less prone to opening of they are bunped, or something catches lightly on the opening stud, or plate.

I've had more than a few open in pocket, but never a triad lock.

Another very important consideration for me is that the strong bias toward closure makes them harder to flip open. In many jurisdictions, if an officer cab get them to flip open with wrist action they will charge you with carrying a gravity knife.

I have a few designs I don't care much for this reason.

Never get tired of that video. Gotta get one.

Thanks for the info. I have always more or less babied mine. Lately I have been thinking of grabbing another for moderate outdoor use. I find it relatively light for it's size.

Sounds a lot like the warning that came with my G.I. Tanto "... any knife can break if subjected to abuse ... please don't use our knives or swords to baton, or as an axe, screwdriver, prybar, hammer ..."

No problem for me; I don't baton any knife, I have an axe, screwdriver, hammer, and prybar when I need to use those tools.
