I know that this might sound silly but I really dont know how patina look like. whats patina anyway??? I have read from yr previous post that its grey in color. issit always the case? what causes it and will it affect the metal? what a pity yr forum is down... too big a database, needs purging i guess. Thanks in advance

Patina is a thin layer of ferrous oxide on the steel. Ferrous oxide is actually black (unlike ferric oxide which is the familiar red rust) but the color of patina depends on its thickness. If the thickness is equal to one wavelength of blue light then blue light can penetrate the patina to the underlying steel and be reflected, while longer wavelengths are absorbed, so it appears blue. Patina can also appear gold or plum -- it all depends on the thickness.

Outstanding Cougar! in lay terms Patina is
oxidation of the metal. in some cases you want to get rid of it and in other cases you want to keep it. comes down to what ever turns one on. Peace Friends Jerry
