Hey all, I've been looking for the answer for a few hours, and can find it, so I'm going to ask away. Not trying to complain about detent or anything, I understand that it's the way it is for a reason. I'm just curious if the newest 3.5" xm-18s have strong detent, or the weaker detent like the gen 3s? I have heard that the non laser etched early gen 4s have real strong detent, but the newer laser etched gen 4s are weaker like the gen 3s? So are the very newest gen 4s more like the gen 3s, or do they have a strong detent?
Thanks all!

I was wondering the same thing, I much prefer a strong detent for safety reasons and I heard the same thing you are talking about. The weak detent is keeping me from getting one, but it that has changed I will pick one up!

Detent is a dead horse and we don't discuss it.

Adjusting the pivot correctly solves the riddle. If you cannot figure it out on your own, that's kinda sad. I can on every XM I own and I have several.

Merry Christmas to all!

Like I said, I don't care if it comes with a strong or weak detent, I just want to know which to expect.

You will be very happy with your new xm Ian, N2k and several members here are a wealth of knowlege when it comes to tweaking and adjusting your new knife.
In a very short time you will be "making it yours" and passing the guide-on as well.

This is garbage. Merry Christmas. Over-tightening the pivot is not the answer to a weak detent, a stronger detent is.

Expect a weak one. I have had a handful of the new ones and they have had weak detents. That being said, it's not really a huge deal if you carry it in your right front pocket, just make sure it's slid up against the side, or carry tip down. My blades have never opened in my pocket, but the retention isn't ideal.

It's nice we have so many "detent experts" around here. It's a relative and subjective thing. And haters are gonna hate.

The detents are all the same, all the generations, what you've "heard" is wrong. It's simple, if you don't like something we make or it doesn't fit your needs, return it, sell it, move on. XM's have 3 methods of deployment, thumbstud, flipper and inertia, we are not going to put a stiff "sit on the couch and flip your knife" detent and sacrifice one of the opening methods. If you want super stiff detent, buy a different knife. If you want a knife that has proven its performance, reliability, and cutting capability since 2004, consider an XM. Find what you like and that fits your needs, that's why there are tens of thousands of pocket knives out there to chose from.
