It was asked in the forum a while back exactly where the Gurkhas of today get their kukris. Here is the answer from a British Gurkha officer now serving in western Nepal:

We have 2 contractors who make Kukris for the British Army:
a. No 1 (dress) are produced by Khukri House
b. No 2 (field) by a private contractor through PRI (basically an acronym for the regimental buyer) BGK (British Gurkhas Kathmandu).

Both are manufactured in Dharan and there are no pattern/model numbers. Contractors provide a sample with their quotation.

Khukri House also supply the RNA (Royal Nepal Army). Sorry, I do not know about India suppliers.

John,

Do you know if they currenly mark the khukuri's or if there are any acceptance stamps? How about quality control?

I don't think Khukuri House actually produces anything but subcontracts to shops around Dharan and sells the products. Somewhat like Himalayan Imports. HI doesn't produce anything but sells products made at BirGorkha -- but Pala owns both operations.

I believe Uncle is saying that Pala owns both HI and the BirGorkha factory. Isn't Khukuri House owned by Mr. Lalitkumar Lama?

Will, no acceptance or proof marks or anything else. Sometimes a knife would get marked at a battalion level, but it all seems quite haphazard.
