I was perusing the local Spyderco dealer, and they had the SPY-27 version as well as new current production regular lightweight para 3's in stock.
What I took notice in was the finish on the blade of the standard model. It is now a bead blasted type finish. Flat grey in color, with none of the machine lines visible. upon closer inspection, the Spyder and the blade markings are now black as well. What really impressed me was it was dead centered. I looked at all 6 they had in stock and all 6 were perfectly centered.
I's not sure if they have changed the recipe for the FRN, but it also felt slightly different. A bit more like the Delica FRN. It is kinda of hard to explain, but it didn't feel as cheap, if that makes sense. I was able to compare it directly to the SPY-27 model, and it's blue FRN felt cheaper than the newer black FRN.
I compared it to the two SPY-27 models they had and the SPY-27 were slightly off favoring the clip side, pretty much like all Lightweight Para's. IMO Spyderco and their CQI has resolved the centering issue the lightweight para 3's have.
I almost picked up one of the SPY-27 models, as I have been wanting one for a while. Seeing the improvement in the standard model, I seriously considered picking one them up as well.
Decisions, decisions.
