This is one of my current projects I have in the works. I would really like to hear some suggestions for handle material on this one!
Thanks for your help.

That's a pretty sexy profile... to get it the rest of the way there:

I suggest that you put 416 bolsters front AND rear, dovetail them, and use ivory in-between. You can get a pair of scales that would fit that for a very fair price. I buy most of my elephant ivory from David Warther, and he could set you up with some at a decent price.

And for the pins, I would use very small pins and pattern them. I like the idea of two semi-circles tangent to each other, something like this )( but elongated. All it would take is 5 for each bracket, and with SMALL pins it would show that pattern well.

Looks like clean grinds

Just some ideas.

Bob,
Beautiful stylish knife, I agree with Nick
about the elephant ivory but perhaps you could look at some Mother of pearl inlays.Once again very nice knife.

Very nice grind lines. The tang shape reminds me of the "coffin-handle" bowies. I think rosewood scales with nickel silver pins in the coffin-handle pattern would be my preference. Of course if I could grind bevels that good, I would be happy with any kind of handle.

Bob-

My take on bolster pins, is unless they are intentionally contrasting to the bolster, you should never be able to see them.

With that in mind, I would recommend you order 416 SS barstock for the bolsters and 3/32" 416 SS pin-stock.

416 is a great deal tougher than brass, so it takes a little more precision and a lot more force to get everything seated and tight, but (IMHO) it sure looks good when done.

As far as size, I would figure that out by using the bottom of the coffin flare as a guide. Measure it so that the rear bolster will come up past the widest point of the flare about 1/4- 3/8" If you dovetail the bolsters, figure it so that the handle slabs will slope down and just meet at the widest point of the flare.

Then match the length for the front bolster and apply it first.

Just my ideas
