how would the current SOG bowies, tech and 2, compare in quality and durability with the old blackjack (effingham) "randall" type bowies ?

the Blackjack's 1-7 are superior to SOG's bowies in almost every aspect.

exellent geometry,convex edge
one of the best heat treat on the market
Exellent Steel, hold an edge & tough
Awesome craftmanship
Made in USA.

SOG Bowie's are made with AUS-8 stainless steel in Taiwan.
Better corrosion resistance.
The older where made in Japan
with both Aus-8 SS & SK-5 carbon steel.

Agree the new ones are extremely sharp. I have the new Halo equal to Randall in fit and finish with better steel IMHO.

That's the easiest question all day. Go for the Blackjack - there's no comparison.

As far as I know the current Blackjack`s 1-7 and Halo are made by BRKT. So I would personally say that they are superior in overall quality - toughness and durability than SOG bowies.

For your information, you may find this thread testing a Randall and a Busse enlightening:

Samael, I did find it very interesting. I have owned Randalls and love them but cost wise Bark river and Blackjack are great knives for the $. I still think A2 when treated right offers an edge. As with BR and classic line of Blackjack they are semi customs. So no real collectable value (makes great user) when compair to customs like Randall or Holder.
